Hi RonGee,
An error message can be helpful, but the problem does not always prompt one. First, if you are using any message anti-virus or spam filtering disable the option. Continue to use normal system scan. You could try using a new OE identity for test purposes before examining the main (OE) identity in search of a problem file. The problem could be caused by damaged or corrupt message store file(s). Sometimes message store files have the read-only attribute set, which can cause the same problems. Folders.dbx is a critical file that could be causing the problem, but the answer may lie in another (*.dbx) file. 2. Damage to a DBX file. There is sometimes an error message, but when this is absent finding the (possibly) bad DBX file becomes a guessing game. The problem could be with Outbox.dbx, Sent Items.dbx, Inbox.dbx or other file. These can be renamed one at a time. The key file Folders.dbx can become damaged, and it can be renamed or deleted. [See Inside OE to understand what can occur when Folders.dbx is replaced. http://insideoe.com/files/store.htm#deldbx ] After renaming one try starting Outlook Express. (see below) To help prevent this issue compact messages on a regular basis. This is most safely done in offline mode when the files are not being written to. Do not set Outlook Express to automatically compact messages in the background. This option is not available in the newer versions. It is also recommended that messages be periodically removed from the Inbox. A new Outlook Express folder can be created, or backup procedure performed if ready access is not required. This will help prevent a corrupted Inbox and help safeguard messages you wish to keep. Open the Store Folder Instead of using search the store folder can be opened directly. Each identity has its own store folder. a.. In Outlook Express click on Tools, Options, Maintenance tab...Store Folder. b.. Place the cursor at the left of the text of the path to the folder. c.. Drag the cursor to the right until the text scrolls to the end. d.. Right-click on the text and choose Copy. e.. In the Start, Run box right-click Paste. Click OK to open the store folder. f.. Close Outlook Express before working with the message store files. Using Keyboard Shortcuts for Transfer of the Folder Path Courtesy of: Jim Pickering, MVP-Outlook Express An even easier method when opening that page is to use the Tab to highlight the folder location, then Ctrl+C and close OE, then use Start/Run and Ctrl+V. Same caveat about hidden files applies but can be easily modified in Explorer by using Tools/Folder Options. -- Tim K. aka Kuay Tim MS-MVP - Outlook Express Lynnwood, WA * "RonGee" wrote in message ... Hi Ron,
Another possibility, which usually has a related error message, is a message that cannot be downloaded to OE. If you have Web mail access read your messages there, and then delete them. There might be a suspect message (from an unknown source or message with an attachment) or two which could be deleted first before trying a Send/Receive in OE. The Web mail page can be left open while doing this. -- Tim K. aka Kuay Tim MS-MVP - Outlook Express Lynnwood, WA * "RonGee" wrote in message ...
