I've used OE for years. In the past few months, I've received emails with
no From, To, Subject or message. In the same 5 minute period, some will be blank and others come through fine. I have no Norton or McAfee on my laptop, no anti-virus other than Windows standard, I've cleared the Temp and Temporary Internet files, reduced the default OE files to less than 100 messages each and still am getting blank messages. I've also done virus and spyware checks with no findings. I know that the bona-fide messages are coming in blank since I have sent messages to myself and all of the messages appear on an ISP server that I can access separately. Any other ideas or solutions? |

Ok, Bruce. I've executed all the steps in your reference. Hopefully, it
will fix the problem. If not, I'll use the CW Shredder and as a final step reinstall OE6 with the registry fixes noted. Since you say you don't have /any/ anti-virus, it is a good chance your
machine is infected. Doing a reinstall may not eliminate a virus. I use anti-virus continuously - I've just removed Norton and McAfee due to
their constant interference with all other activities and ridiculous slowing of my machine. Daily scans reveal no viruses or spyware. All mail flows through protected servers before getting to the laptop. I'll try some of these other resources that you recommend, as well, but was trying to see if there is an OE issue that I'm not aware of. Does the fact that my OE has thousands of emails - in user defined folders - have any impact on receiving new mails with attachments? What AV do you use?
Do you compact your folders regularly? You didn't mention the problem was with e-mails with attachments before. General precautions for Outlook Express: Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}. And backup often. Backup & Resto http://www.insideoutlookexpress.com/backup/ This is a great two click program: Outlook Express Quick Backup (OEQB) http://www.oehelp.com/OEBackup/Default.aspx -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Rich F" wrote in message ... After removing Norton / McAfee, remove your mail account, close and reopen
OE and add your mail account back again. See if that fixes it. steve "Rich F" wrote in message ...
