Default Outlook Express 6 random connection failures!!!

I am having an issue with OE6 that just recently began. Running XP Pro SP2,
2 users ids defined to workstation, Norton Internet Security 2006. If I
reboot my workstation, I can access OE6 with out issue but after a period of
time (no pattern), i get the error message that follows below. If I switch
to the other user id and access her email account, I will get the error also.
If I reboot the pc, it now works again. I have many of the suggestions
found on line and nothing has helped. I don't think it is firewall related
since a reboot seems to allow the connection to work. Can any one provide a
solution to this? I have been struggling with this for several days and I
need a solution.
here is the complete error message:
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail.comcast.net',
Server: 'mail.comcast.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

How long has Comcast been your ISP? Were you recently switched from
Adelphia or Roadrunner to Comcast?

Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

paste
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

I have been a comcast customer for over 5 years. I tried your suggestion
regarding Anti virus email scan settings and it didn't change anything. I
also have already seen the troubleshooting tips provided on the MICROSOFT
site and they offer no benefit either. The one remaining step that I have
not taken was to reinstalled OE6 as stated in that doc, but I am unsure if i
have to backup my folder info and account info some how, or if I follow the
steps for the reinstall uinder XP if everything will just get put back to
where it was? any thoughts?

Reinstalling probably won't resolve the problem.

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. Leave Email Scanning (and any anti-spam applications) disable &
try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity (File Identities
Add new identity). Assuming all is well, (1) compact all folders in the

old identity, (2) import messages from the old identity into the new one,
and then (3) delete the old one (File Identities Manage Identities).

Intermittent errors are often at the server. The reboot may just be a
coincidence. The server recovered in the time that it took you to
reboot.

10061 = Connection refused

You may want to complain to your ISP.

At the very least turn off email scanning in Norton. It doesn't provide any
protection.

It would be better to completely uninstall Norton and not replace it with
MacAfee.

Default Outlook Express 6 random connection failures!!!

I'm having exactly the same problem. It must have started a couple of weeks
ago. I have Windows XP Home with SP 2 installed. We have 4 users on the P.C.
If the first person logs off from their profile back to the login screen,
then anyother user will not be able to use Outlook, Outlook Express or any
other Email scanning program. The only other way, would be to use the Browser
(I.E. 7, Firefox etc) to get your emails.

However, if the first user just "switchs user", then the next login via
another account will be ok to use Outlook, Outlook Express etc. It seems that
the ISP will only understand the connection details from the first user.

The problem has nothing to do with Anti virus or email scanning. It has to
do with Microsoft and their recent patches. It is only when you log off and
log on again that the problem occurs. Switching identities allows normal
function. Suggesting replacing Norton with MacAfee is not good advice. Your
header should say MacAfee salesman.
