I have just completed a clean install on a new drive of xp Home Edition and
updated it to SP2 including all the security updates from MS update site. It is a legal copy and was activated over the internet OK. I used Outlook Express Backup Genie program to back up all messages etc on the old drive. I then fitted the old drive as a slave and again using Outlook Express Backup Genie program restored all messages etc to OE on the new drive. In OE I click on tools Options then click on the maintenance tab. If I alter anything here and click on 'apply' I immediately get a window pop up - "Options" in the blue bar at the top below is a red circle with a white cross and the message " Please enter a value between 5 and 100 for the percent at which to compact files. There is no ware to enter this info. There is a comment part way down "When Compacting Messages" under this are two boxes - "Delete Read Messages in News Groups" and "Delete News Messages" then a box to enter a number "days after being downloaded" I want to move the stored folder and this is how I found out about this problem I hope I have given enough info for someone to help Grimreaper |

Did you see this behavior before you restored the data using OE Backup

No, because I did not run OE I just restored the data - messages /
addressbook etc. it have no messages / address book contacts. OE was 'new' so to speak. OE works i.e. send / receive messages OK. This seems to be the only problem. It is not a big deal but I am doing this work for someone else and I would like it to be OK. Not sure if that helps you Thank you for your response Best Regards Grinreaper "PA Bear" wrote in message ... Did you see this behavior before you restored the data using OE Backup Genie? I don't think I've ever encountered such behavior before. Then again, I've
never dealth with OE Backup Genie either. Something tells me it's at the root of the problem. Good luck. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin; DTS-L.org GrimReaper wrote: No, because I did not run OE I just restored the data - messages / addressbook etc. it have no messages / address book contacts. Good morning Mr Bear
When people get a problem with their computers they do not always tell the whole story, they just want it fixed. In the cold light of day I went back to the Maintenance folder and was able to do this. Click on the Message store button, change the path of the messages. Clicked Ok to the message about the store will change then OE is next started but this time I did not click OK, apply was grey. I clicked on the red square / white cross then exited. No warning message this time. I re started OE and the store had moved to the new location but the original problem still remains. I think you are right about OE backup genie. This new set-up has only one account Janet 'Surname' but in Windows Explorer under Documents and settings there is the account Janet 'Surname but also the account Janet with no surname. This is the original account name on the old disk. The Janet account does not show up in the accounts icon in Control panel. I deleted the Janet account but this has not fixed the problem but other than that OE works fine. Thank you for your comments, the lady will never go there and I have made a note in my records about this problem Thank you for your time Best Regards Grimreaper "PA Bear" wrote in message ... Do you see the same behavior in a new Identity? If not, (1) compact all
folders in the old identity, (2) import messages from the old identity into the new one, and then (3) delete the old one (File Identities Manage Identities). To avoid such corruption in futu - Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm - WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is automatically compacting your message store. - Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection. And, of course, avoid OE Backup Genie.
