Can anyone explain why in OE6 running in a XPpro system the following
occurs? Tools/options/maintenance/--clean up now local files outlook express total size 196 mb wasted space 195 mb These sizes are after running the delete all headers and message bodies routine. Shouldn't it be 0 and 0 Thank you Mel |

Space taken up after you move or delete messages is not reclaimed until you
compact your folders. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "shakey" shakeyATsonic.net wrote in message ... Shouldn't it be 0 and 0 The files will not shrink until you compact them. Compacting of folders is necessary or they will become corrupted or else so large that they can no longer be used. Deleting a message does not reclaim the space. The message is marked as deleted but is still there until the folder is compacted. That is why programs such as DBXtract work. If a user closes compacting while compacting is in progress data loss will probably occur. Open OE and click File | Folder | Compact All. Leave the computer alone until it finishes. -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE/WM http://www.fjsmjs.com Answer in newsgroup. Don't expect an answer to email. |

General OE Caveats:
- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm - WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is automatically compacting your message store. - Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin; DTS-L.org shakey wrote: Can anyone explain why in OE6 running in a XPpro system the following occurs?
