Default Get email formatting back after removing Thunderbird program?

My husband donated his "old" computer to me after he got a new laptop. He
had changed the browser to "Firefox" and the email to "Thunderbird". I'm not
a computer whiz. I tried to "wade through" the many, many options for these
programs, but they are too advanced for me! I uninstalled both Firefox and
Thunderbird and started using Internet Explorer 6 and Outlook Express again.

THE PROBLEM: When my hubby switched to Thunderbird email, all the messages
that were stored on the hard drive changed from "Outlook Express Email" to
their format, "Thunderbird Email". Naively, I'm sure, I thought once
Thunderbird was uninstalled, that the emails would go back to their original
OE format. Not!! Now when I want to look at an email, it does not have the
OE program associated with it. It is shown in Windows Explorer as an ".eml"
file. I have a screen come up and ask me what program I want use to open the
email with and I have to to click on OE. I thought that this problem would
just affect the email files on the computer when Thunderbird was being used.
But I continue to get these "unconnected" files even when I save now - even
though Thunderbird is long gone.

I realize that this is not a terrible problem that affects the functioning
of my computer in any way. But it is a nuisance, and I thought if someone
knew how to revert these emails back to their default setting, I would be
most appreciative.

Thanking in advance anyone that can advise me!

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/defaultl.htm

Go to Start | Run and type this command, with the double quotes and spaces:

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg

and then make sure that OE is selected as the default mail program in both
IE and OE.

If that isn't enough, see this article:
"Send To" and E-mail Links Do Not Work Using Outlook Express as Default:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306098

You might also want to try this:

Restores OE to the E-mail clients list in Internet Options
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/oe_client.htm

To set Outlook as the default mail client,- Go to Start, Run - Type in the
following with quotation marks and press OK
"C:\program files\microsoft office\office\outlook.exe" /checkclient
For more information on Outlook see:
