Off on my hollidays next week, is there any way I can turn off my email
rather than coming home to something like 900 unread and junk mails.

Turn it off as in /never/ see any messages sent during that time? Create a
rule for all messages to Delete it from server. They won't delete until you come home and open OE & Send/Receive, but you will never see them.
