Unfortunately, it has been reported on this forum and others that Zone Alarm
users are also experiencing this same problem. May have to get ready for some more nightmares guys! Zone Alarm is rated in the top ten security suites right there with Norton, which equates to more people using these programs. "Tallusman" wrote: Hi guys - I've been troubled with this problem on two occassions now - first time was on an XP pro setup with updates completely disabled, and second time, in the last few days, with a completely clean install of XP pro with all updates installed. The only common thread is Norton Internet Security installed and updated on both machines.... "CNS" wrote: If you are a Windows XP user and are experiencing problems with Outlook Express 6 connecting (error 10061, 0x800CCC0E) when you log on from one user to another and do not want to uninstall your Norton software than read on. This problem started to occur right after I did a Windows Update (4/11 security updates). The following solution worked for me and may work for you. 1. Turn off Automatic Updates located in the Security Center. 2. Do a System Restore to the date prior to when you installed the last set of security updates. To check the date, go to Add/Remove Programs and at the top of the page select “Show all Updates.” This will allow you to view the date the updates were installed. 3. Disable Norton 4. Run Windows Update to reinstall all security patches 5. Enable Norton 6. Always disable Norton before downloading any future security updates using Windows Update. To do this, turn off Automatic Updates and select the “notify me” option. This will allow you to disable Norton before downloading and installing any future security updates. No one has reported, as of yet, if uninstalling the Updates and then reinstalling them with Norton disabled will work as well. I didn’t really feel like testing that solution. But, for someone that doesn’t have Windows XP (System Restore), this could be a fix to the problem. Don’t know? I find it rather strange that anyone would trash their Norton program if they have never experienced any previous problems with OE. It has still not been “confirmed” that Norton is “directly” to blame for this particular issue. Personally, I find it very hard to swallow that this issue has any direct correlation with the problems associated with Norton and OE based on many user reports that none of the workarounds that have been suggested and used in the past to solve such compatibly issues with Norton and OE have worked on this “particular issue” other than uninstalling Norton all together. Wow, that was a mouthful! Also, that there have been numerous posts on several forums that this issue occurred right after users installed the 4/11/07 security updates. I just don’t like what I’ve been reading lately about Windows Updates and conflicts with third party software. To be quite honest, I’ve had more problems with Windows Updates than with Norton, and have found more professional articles related to security update glitches than problems with Norton and OE. By the way, I turned off the email scanning feature when I first installed the program. Happy computing everyone!!! |

I guess that will translate into more customers going to my website to

It occurred to me that there may be some of you that have Windows XP who have
never used System Restore. Below are the directions from MS. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084 I have used it a couple of times before without any problems. It was a real lifesaver when I unfortunately downloaded MS Anti-Spyware Beta about a year or so ago maybe longer. I had so many problems with it, and to my dismay, uninstalling the program didn’t correct the problem. Sound familiar? It obviously altered registry files that weren’t being removed by uninstalling the program. The only time I’ve ever corrected registry files was when I received technical support from MS. Since I don’t have enough IT knowledge to do this on my own, System Restore has worked out great for me! Since this issue appears to be affecting more than one kind (Symantec) AV program, and that there might be more that are experiencing this problem that don’t have System Restore available on their OS, the following might work and is definitely worth a try. 1. Turn off Automatic Updates. 2. Uninstall April and May security update patches. 3. Uninstall your AV/Security program. 4. Reinstall AV/Security program. 5. Disable your AV/Security program. 6. Reinstall all security patches using Windows Update 7. Enable AV/Security program and update files. 8. Enable Automatic Updates, but select the “notify me” feature. 9. Check to see if the problem still exists. If the problem goes away, then it’s important to disable you AV program, no matter which one you own, before downloading and installing any future updates. If the problem is still there, then MS needs to be contacted because it appears that registry files need to be edited. I would totally not recommend editing registry files without technical support!!!!! I agree with Tallusman that it’s sad that no one can really pinpoint exactly WHY this is happening. MS, are you listening and reading????
