Is there a way to configure Outlook Express to automatically delete messages

No. You can create a message rule, but you would have to apply it manually.
IMHO, it is just as easy to click on the newest message you want to delete, scroll down to the last and hold the Shift key while you click on it. Pretty sure. At least that is what I've been told. I just set it for 1 day
in another account, so I won't know for sure until tomorrow. The help section does say messages, but not message headers.
