Not more than 10 minutes ago, Bruce Hagen answered a query for me. That's
when my 'delete key' quit working. When creating or replying to an e-mail, after highlighting text, my delete key quit working. I had to backspace one letter at a time when I replied to Bruce. I immediately thought my keyboard went gunnysack. But, 'delete' works fine in my wordprocessor. Only in creating/forwarding e-mails - it appears to have totally quit working. This is a new one for me. Help {please} - james |

Your headers (Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2869) tell us that you're
running outdated and much less-secure versions of OE and, probably, IE and Windows XP. Check in at Windows Update ASAP & install all critical updates, then see if the behavior persists. NB: I do NOT recommend installing IE7 via Windows Update or Automatic Updates! -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin; DTS-L.org James wrote: Not more than 10 minutes ago, Bruce Hagen answered a query for me. I didn't break it!!! w
Does the Delete button on the toolbar work, or right click | Delete? If not, you may have a damaged identity especially if it is the default Main Identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it. If all is well, you can import your messages and Address Book from the old identity and delete it. Bruce, this is weird! While awaiting your reply, I went to 'Switch
Identities' - to see if maybe I still had an old {but corrupted} one from when you guided me through a 'create a new identity' experience. I saw two entries: 'James' {the last one I created} and below that: 'Main Identity.' Thinking maybe 'main identity' was another identity, I attempted to switch. Nothing happened - except my OE froze, and I had to re-launch, Now, delete works. Prior to my first 'Help' e-mail, I did re-launch OE - didn't help. Oh, yes, my Delete Button on toolbar worked - in term of deleting e-mails. Any idea what's happening. If you suspect it's time to generate a new 'identity' - I'm sure I've forgot how to import my messages and Address Book. I hope I save all the instructions you provide from before. PA Bear replied and suggested I update my IE6/OE6 - as he noticed it was out-of-date. I guess I should to that. It's just that I'm always been kinda reluctant to visit MS Update. Thanks PA Bear,
Since I use Firefox and am reluctant to run willy-nilly and install everything MS Update has in their store, I most likely did fall behind. I took you counsel and visited MS and selected updates I thought relevant {especially to OE}. My 'Delete' key still functions. If you quits again, I'll generate a new Identity - as Bruce suggested. I scrolled way down on the newsgroup and located some good 'how-to' on importing Messages and Address Book. YW & glad to hear all is well.
While a given critical security update might be labeled for, e.g., Internet Explorer or Outlook Express, the security vulnerabilities addressed by the update are in the Operating System itself (i.e., Windows). If you're running a Windows machine, it makes sense to keep fully patched so the machine's as safe as possible to use online and on a network. Automatic Update includes an option (Notify Only) where you must approve both what updates are downloaded and when to install them. Sounds like just the ticket for you so you'll know what critical security updates are available. How to configure and use Automatic Updates in WinXP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525 -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin; DTS-L.org James wrote: Thanks PA Bear, Since I use Firefox and am reluctant to run willy-nilly and install everything MS Update has in their store, I most likely did fall behind.
