Default Outlook Express receiving hotmail but not allowing me to view or o

Can someone please help me, as I'm finding Microsoft so unhelpful!
I have Outlook Express 6, and I use it to receive, store and send all my
hotmail emails. I got this new laptop last week and booted it up and it was
all working fine - then the next day I get the problem.
I cannot view in the preview bar, and on double clicking the message (which
appears in the top panel with sender's name and subject etc) itself, I get
the header and then a blank page.
I can use the MSN hotmail.com but I prefer Outlook Express. I also have
filed many passwords in My Documents from Outlook Express and now I can't
open them either!
Can somene please help me????

Default Outlook Express receiving hotmail but not allowing me to view

Your new machine has WinXP or Vista?

Assuming WinXP and that everything was OK last Wednesday and that the
problem only started on Thursday:

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity (File
Identities Add new identity). Assuming all is well, (1) compact all
folders in the old identity, (2) import messages from the old identity into
the new one [Don't bother with the Hotmail folders], and then (3) delete the
old one (File Identities Manage Identities).

To avoid such corruption in futu

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Default Outlook Express receiving hotmail but not allowing me to view

Hi PA,
Machine has XP.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'one or more of your accounts' as I only have
hotmail. I've done the set up of new identity thing, and then it asks if I
want to switch to this or not...
How do I compact all the folders in the old identity and import into the new
one? As I only have hotmail, this is the only account I want to import (not
sure if I am confused here or not).
I usually don't use inbox or sent messages to archive as I have set up my
offline folders. My deleted items folder is automatically deleted daily.

If/when I fix this thing, I'll look into the compacting of folders, but
first I need to fix the hotmail in outlook express.

I really appreciate the time and help you are giving me.

Is the machine fully patched at Windows Update?

Do you have any problems using/reading the Hotmail account in the new
identity?

How do I compact all the folders in the old identity...

Open OE to the old identity then see
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact.

...and import into the new
one?

Open OE to the new identity File Import Messages OE6 Import mail
from an Identity Select (highlight) the old identity ...

More at http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/how.htm#importOE5

The import will only include the old identity's Local folders.
