OE 6 Gone Crazy

After many hours of no activity, I sent a new E-mail to a new address,
but instead of sending my new E-mail to a new address,
it sent a duplication of an old E-mail to an old address
that was sent many hours before.

My new E-mail to my new address only went to my Outbox.

I restarted my computer, but the same thing happened.

How do I correct this "out of control" Outlook Express 6?
I am also running Windows XP and MS Office Pro 2003.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ray,

The Outbox may be corrupted. The Outbox.dbx file can be deleted -- a new
empty Outbox will be created when OE starts. In some cases the Sent
Items folder can be the problem when it is used when sending. The Sent
Items.dbx file can be renamed or deleted. As is the case with the
Outbox, this default folder will be recreated when OE starts. You may
want to move messages in the Sent Items to a user created OE local
folder to save them from being deleted.

To resolve this behavior, rename or delete the Outbox.dbx file:
Close Outlook Express before renaming or deleting a DBX file.

Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
In the Named box, type Outbox.dbx.
In the Look in box, click your primary hard disk (usually drive C), and
then click Find Now. You may need to include hidden files and folders
for your search.
Right-click the Outbox.dbx file that appears, and then click Rename. It
is okay to delete the file instead.
Type Outbox.old, and then click OK.
Restart Outlook Express to rebuild the Outbox.dbx file, and then send a
message.

Open the Store Folder Alternative

1. In Outlook Express click on Tools, Options, Maintenance tab...Store
Folder.
2. Place the cursor at the left of the text of the path to the folder.
3. Drag the cursor to the right until the text scrolls to the end.
4. Right-click on the text and choose Copy.
5. In the Start, Run box right-click Paste. Click OK to open the store
folder.

Using Keyboard Shortcuts for the Open the Store Folder Alternative

An even easier method when opening that page is to use the Tab to
highlight the folder location, then Ctrl+C and close OE, then use
Start/Run
and Ctrl+V. Same caveat about hidden files applies but can be easily
modified in Explorer by using Tools/Folder Options.

Thank You, Tim, for our helpful response.

I followed your instructions and renamed my Inbox.old, Outbox.old, and Sent
Items.old, and restarted my computer.

So far, so good.

Now my question is: "How do I open these renamed folders?"

When I try to open my renamed folder, "Inbox.old" a dialogue box states
cannot open a file larger than 32 KB.

When I try to open my renamed folder, "Sent Items.old" I receive the same
message - cannot open a file larger than 32 KB.

When I try to open my renamed folder, "Outbox.old" - it only had 5 short
files in it, but the dialogue box is filled with 1/4 inch squares.

How do I open these renamed folders?

Are you trying to open the dbx files in the message store? That won't work.
You need a folder in OE. If you could have, it would have been easier if you
moved the messages to user created folders first and then just deleted the
dbx files. I think the old Outbox is empty, but do this for each of the
renamed folders.

In Windows Explorer, click on the dbx file for the renamed folder and drag
it to the Desktop. Open OE and create a folder with the *exact* same name as
the one on your Desktop, (i.e. Inbox.old). Open the new folder and then
close OE. Go back to Windows Explorer and Click Desktop and drag the file
from the Desktop to the OE store folder that you clicked on to reveal the
..dbx files. Prompt - "Do you want to overwrite......."? Click Yes.
