Default Outlook Express Broken

OE just broke. When attempting to open OE (ver 6.0.2900.2180) with XP Home I
get the error 0x800C012E,5 and then MSOE.dll not initialized (what does that
mean?). I've got plenty for memory and disc space. I got a copy of OE 6 but
it won't setup because I have a newer version. Can I remove the bad OE and
reload the new OE6 without losing my emails and addresses? and let Update
bring it up current? Or what can I do?
Thnaks,
Brian

From:
http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/directdb.htm

Errors in DIRECTDB.DLL or MSOE.DLL generally indicate corruption in the
message store. Start by moving Folders.dbx to an empty Windows folder. You
will lose your folder hierarchy and the lists of newsgroups on the news
servers, but it might get you into OE. Note: The DBX file are hidden files
in Win2K, WinXP and Win2K3.

If that doesn't do it then move all of the DBX files to the same folder as
Folders.dbx. You should now get into OE. Try importing the messages from the
folder you moved the DBX files to. If you can't, you can use one of these
tools to extract the messages:

DBXtract:
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx

DBXpress: {much faster for large files}
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx

Note: It can take a long time (days with really large folders).

The messages can then be dragged from the Windows folder back into a folder
in an open instance of OE.

Start he http://www.insideoe.com/problems/errors.htm#crash

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown
your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

This one is free. Never used it though.

Macallan Outlook Express Extraction:
http://www.insideoe.com/resources/tools.htm#macallan

For the futu

This freeware tool backs up everything in OE in seconds. Disregard what is
written in red. That is referring to a different program.

When I attempt to load OE, I get the blue screen and then after about 3
minutes, a message that says that oe is incorrectly installed or memory is
bad. I have been using it for several month with SP2 and IE 7.0. I have the
same problem with the OE6 download, get the same message.

Is there any place one can get the latest version?

I have the SP2 disc, would reloading that correct the problem?

No. That error is the default error message and is misleading. Try
deleting folders.dbx and disable email scanning of antivirus, if it is
enabled. See points 3, 4 and 7 he www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3
