Default MS Vista newsgroups - cannot post w/OE

On the RoadRunner news servers, I can see postings on the
Microsoft.public.windows.vista.* NGs, but when I try to
reply or post, I get an *immediate* error message from OE
that posting is not allowed. I've gone so far as to delete the
news account and re-download the list of NGs and re-subscribe
to MS's Vista NGs, but the problem persists - and only for the
Vista NGs. But this does NOT happen when I use Thunderbird
as the news client. What is wrong with Outlook Express, and
can it be corrected "in the field". (BTW, I use OE v. 6 .)

Go to Tools | Options | Send | News Settings | Plain Text and change it
from MIME to UUENCODE format. Then see if you can post.

I just tried it - no joy. (I'm posting this via Microsoft's news server.)

Well, that was a shot anyway. Bellsouth won't let you post to its
newsgroups unless they are UUENCODED.

I don't know what the difference could be then with Tbird versus OE.

I've known about that server for years, but I'd rather
keep just one account on my news client. I also pay
RoadRunner for news service, and I'd like to be able to
use all of it. There seems to be a flag in the Vista NG
list on the RR server that is honored by OE and not
honored by Thunderbird that tells the client that no posting
is allowed on that NG. Since Microsoft has its fingers
in its Microsoft NGs and in OE, it stands to reason that
Microsoft has its hand in this restriction.

Who has their hand in not including your original message in your reply?

What is the exact wording of the message?
Have you questioned RoadRunner?
What is used for the server port number?

The first error message from OE states:
"Posting is not allowed to the newsgroup
'microsoft.public.windows.vista.general'. Please remove
'microsoft.public.windows.vista.general' from your newgroups line."

A second message now comes up that says:
"One or more newsgroup names could not be verified. Do you want to post this
message anyway?" If I press "Yes", sometimes the message gets posted.

I have "questioned" RoadRunner's Tech Help reps by telephone several
times, and each time someone higher up text messages the phone rep that
it's Outlook Express's fault and that I should try another news client. The
outsourced news service provider for RoadRunner - News Hosting - says
it's either RoadRunner's fault or Microsoft's. When I *do* try another
news client, e.g. Thunderbird, the error message don't appear and the
posting goes through normally. Since trying another news client "solved"
the problem, RoadRunner doesn't want to discuss it further with me.

The server port number is 119, the standard NNTP port.

The issue is on RoadRunner's end, not yours or OE's. Either work with
RoadRunner Support to get this straightened out or use the free MS
newsserver to accesss MS newsgroups (news://msnews.microsoft.com).

It may be an act of RoadRunner, but it seems to use a feature of
Outlook Express because the error messages come from Outlook
Express. Indeed, the first one even says on it "Outlook Express",
and it appears *immediately* after I hit Send, with no discernable
delay at all. And when I use a different news client, such as
Thunderbird, the problem does not arise. The problem is specific
to Outlook Express, and it *should* be easy to correct in the
field (i.e. "hack") if anyone manning this NG knows how Outlook
Express works.

Are these messages occurring when you are replying to a cross-posted
message in another newsgroup?

Probably all you need to do is refresh the list of newsgroups for that account.
E.g. press Ctrl-w and Alt-R

Before doing that you could confirm by typing: c.w vista gen
that your current list does not show that newsgroup as being hosted.

If you want your newsgroups list updated automatically
you should check: Notify me if there are any new newsgroups
(in Options, General tab)

Good luck
