My boss uses Outlook and he routinely forwards vCards to me for our new
clients. But when I open his message in Outlook Express 6.0, there is no attachment. Although I don't like to use it, I have Outlook on my computer. In order to get the vCards, I have to open the message in Outlook. The vCard appears at the bottom of the message as an attachment. Why can't I see the vCard in Outlook Express? BTW, if I check the message properties in OE, I can see the information contained in the vCard at the end of the message, after all the message headers. |

If messages are sent using the Exchange family of mail programs
(includes Windows Messaging or Outlook97/98/2000+) and the option to use Rich Text Format is selected, it puts the RTF message (and any attached files) in an attachment called WINMAIL.DAT (application/ms-tnef). But this attachment is useless to most other mail programs. In some mail programs (e.g. Outlook Express), the attachment won't even be visible. The Exchange user can turn off the RTF option for messages to selected recipients. Note that if sending via an Exchange server, the Exchange server administrator may be overriding the mail client settings. In this case, the administrator will need to make changes on the server. In some cases, the Exchange server actually removes the attachments to some recipients. For additional information, see the MS-TNEF WINMAIL.DAT Attachments section of Decoding Internet Attachments - A Tutorial http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_san...de.htm#ms-tnef At the above link is information on several utilities that can be used to recover the attachment if the sender can't or won't resend it in plain text (or HTML) mode. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "ginahoy" wrote in message ... I just set up Outlook 2000 on one my employee's laptop a few days ago and when she sent me a spreadsheet, I couldn't see it from OE, but when I opened Outlook, it was there. I'm guessing her Outlook defaulted to RTF format. When she returns tomorrow, I can verify and change this. But this raises another question... If my boss has his Outlook configured to RTF (I can't verify immediately since he's in another state), then why am I able to see all of his attachments but not the vCards? If you look at the message source (Ctrl-F3) on a received message and
see the WINMAIL.DAT attachment, that indicates the RTF was used for sending. I've seen cases where the sender sometimes uses RTF and sometimes not. Part of it could be new messages verses replies or sending to individuals verses groups. If you would like, you may send me one of the problem vCard messages and I'll take a look at it to see if something else might be going on. It's best if you zip the message so that I get an exact copy of it. To do that, do a File, Save As to an EML file of a problem message. Then Right click the saved EML file and select Send To, Compressed (zipped) folder. Then e-mail me the resulting ZIP file. Alternately, you can do a Message, Forward As Attachment of a problem message. This is not as good as the zip file since the headers can be modified in transit which may obscure the problem. A simple Forward is worthless since it does not include the headers. e-mail: -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "ginahoy" wrote in message ... I received the sample mail.
The vCard was there. The issue is that OE doesn't treat vCards as normal attachments. Instead it appears as a small rolodex icon in the upper right hand side of the message header. Something easily overlooked. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Michael Santovec" wrote in message ...
