Default Email by 3rd party server

Some while ago I started a thread regarding problems with sending email via
a third party email server. I thought the issue was resolved but now a new
twist once again makes me question my understanding.

A client's ISP is BT. BT blocks port 25 and, therefore, the possibility of
using a third party email server (unless you pay extra). At that time it
was also not possible to set up Outlook Express to send email via the BT
email server to the third party email server. That position was reluctantly
accepted.

My ISP is Orange. It also blocks port 25. However, I have successfully set
up Outlook Express to send email through a third party email server.

On the face of it this is anomalous. Either blocking port 25 can be
configured (by the ISP) to block both 'routes' to the ISP or (probably) I
don't fully understand the issue. Please enlighten me.

Thanks.

Generally, outbound port 25 blocking prevents you from using SMTP message
submission servers other than the one your ISP provides. Some ISPs
actually
use a port 25 redirect, though, which forces all outbound SMTP traffic
through the ISP message submission server. AOL was a good one for doing
that.

The way around that is to find out if your third party Email Service
Provider's SMTP message submission servers accept connections on some port
other than port 25. RFC 2476 designates port 587 for message submission.
Yahoo! mail servers, GMail, and GMX all accept message submission to port
587; GMail and GMX *require* using STARTTLS.

Another common message submission port is port 465 (requires SSL). GMail
(again), MyRealBox, and, recently added, Yahoo! Mail use port 465. I have
use 'smtp.mail.yahoo.com.au:465' w/SSL. For 'yahoo.com' email addresses,
'smtp.mail.yahoo.com:465' w/SSL works. My ISP uses
'smtp.att.yahoo.com:465'
w/SSL.

Thanks Norman for your full reply.

I will try to find out the alternative submission ports my 'alternative' ISP
will accept. However, this does not resolve what, to me, is an anomalous
situation. My ISP (Orange) allows me to send email using the third party
domain email address (using port 25) yet it blocks that very port!

Regards.
