I have deleted the pop3dbx file and that got rid of 45 messages, but now I am
starting over with duplicated emails. What is the pop3 bak file? should I delete that too, or what can I do to stop this madness. |

You /are/ running a POP3 account and not a Hotmail, or IMAP account?
The pop3uidl.bak file should be in the Recycle Bin unless you restored it, which is unnecessary. If you restored it to the message store, delete it. All your dbx files are backed up in the Recycle Bin when you compact. Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced. Uncheck: Leave a copy of messages on the server. Then delete the Pop3uidl.dbx file. You will get the messages one more time, but that should be it. With OE ***closed***, find the DBX file for the folder in question {Pop3uidl.dbx} and delete it. A new one will be created automatically when you open OE. General precautions for Outlook Express: Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. I thought you knew where it was since you said you already deleted it once.
Close OE and this is how you find the message store. Delete any file that is named Pop3uidl. Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer. In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA "Theresa Marie" wrote in message ... instructions...I did what you said, and you said it would do it once more then it should be ok. the problem now is, it will not download the last message....it disconnects after five minutes of downloading one (the last) message. Now what.... Thanks Bruce for your help "Bruce Hagen" wrote: I thought you knew where it was since you said you already deleted it once. Close OE and this is how you find the message store. It downloads all but the last message?
Did you do this as I suggested? Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs, slows down sending and receiving, and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for lose of messages. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 If it still doesn't download the last message, it could be a corrupt message. Access your mail through your ISP's Website and read the message and delete it. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA "Theresa Marie" wrote in message ... I did turn off the email scanner, just as you said. I don't think the
message is corrupt because , lets say I have 20 messages, the 20th will not download until I get 21 messages. then I will see the 20th one. "Bruce Hagen" wrote: It downloads all but the last message? Bruce helped me correct my problem before, but it only lasted for a day, and
now I have dupicate messages coming in . I am up to 55 , they just keep adding on instead of starting fresh. Also, the last email never seems to download, then setrvice expires. I am wondering if this is not my problem now. |

If even one message does not complete the download, you will get duplicates.
Until ALL messages are downloaded, your ISP does not clear the mail box. This is for your protection. Then the next time you connect, you get all the messages again. You will have to find out why your downloads do not complete. If it is due to too many messages, use your ISP's webmail option to go and delete the messages you have already downloaded.
