![]() I do use Trend Micro for spam and Norton Sytemworks for AV and utilities. I have heard about the Norton-OE incompatibility before. However, for me, Norton and OE have worked very well for quite a few years. I uninstalled Windows Desktop Search and tried Google Search. Google seems to be able to handle whatever incompatibilities exist; so far it is working fine. If significant incompatibilities do appear, I will reconsider my choices for email and AV software. Thank you for your suggestions. Lou "Bruce Hagen" wrote in message ... Norton, (and McAfee), programs are not compatible with OE. May I assume you use Trend Micro for spam and are not running two AVs at the same time? Unfortunately, OE doesn't like anti-spam programs either. I can't say if Norton is responsible for your current problem as your post is the first one I have seen here about Windows Desktop Search. If I were you, I would get rid of Norton. Even if it doesn't solve this problem, you will be glad you did down the road. I would suggest either Avast, (freeware), or NOD32, (not free). In the case of Avast, choose Custom Installation and under Resident Protection, uncheck: Internet Mail and Outlook/Exchange. Norton, and McAfee, products are not Outlook Express friendly, and I don't know of any OE-MVP that would recommend using them. I did find some references to problems similar to mine. There are some suggestions that the problem may be due to anti-virus or anti-spam conflicts (I use Norton and Trend Micro). If its any consolation, I've had a properly configured Norton System
Works Professional/Premier edition(versions 2003 through 2006) using OE and Outlook/Office(originally XP, now Office 2003) installed for the last four years on this XP machine with multiple pop3 and http accounts in both email clients without a single incompatibility issue nor any incident amongst NSW/OE/Office/OL that required restoring an image. One non email client issued did occur with the Norton Protected Recycle bin that was corrected by restoring the prior week image and installing the Symantec Shared Component update first and separate from the other available updates. For those that have problems it is extremely difficult to patch/repair a Norton caused gone awry system, if you've not the NSW or Pro versions it would still be wise to invest in imaging software(Acronis or Ghost) to protect your investment and current stability. ...winston MS-MVP Windows Live Mail "jrsyangl" wrote in message news:Y_eAi.2885$ku.1760@trnddc03... winston,
Thank you for the information and advice. I do periodic full backups with MS Backup. Would that be sufficient for the kind of problem you encountered? Or is imaging software really necessary? I guess I am curious about the nature of the problem that you encountered. Lou "...winston" wrote in message ... Wish I could add some comments on the the use of MsBackup.
I've been a fan of imaging software for years. Current imaging programs(Ghost 12 and Acronis True Image 10) can image an entire drive, clone the drive/partition to new, spare, or replacement drive, backup folders/subfolders files and more. Those capabilities surpass anything that MsBackup includes. The nature of the problem: The Norton recycle bin stop logging the deleted files thereby unavailable for retrieval. -- ...winston MS-MVP Windows Live Mail "jrsyangl" wrote in message news:ffAAi.5679$ai3.864@trndny03... winston, Thank you for the information and advice. Thanks for the useful information. I have used BackItUp, Nero, Drive
Image, and lately Retrospect with mixed success. I will look into Ghost and Acronis. Sorry if it is somewhat off-topic, but any preferences between the two? Lou "...winston" wrote in message ... I've used both without any problems on both XP and Vista.
Many prefer Acronis since it is a little easier to use. In XP IDE drives: Acronis True Image 9 or 10 and Ghost 2003, 10, 12 are all acceptable) Sata Drives (Acronis 10 and Ghost 12 are suggested) In Vista(Acronis 10 or Ghost 12 are required for Vista compatibility) Note: each requires an understanding of the tool, drives, partitions and of course a spare drive or partition to store the image. You should expect about 40-60% compression in size when imaging an o/s. A partition with only pictures or music will require almost the same size since those are already compressed. ...winston MS-MVP Windows Live Mail "jrsyangl" wrote in message news:sPKAi.20$9T5.5@trndny02...
