Default OE continually opens by itself

Hello
Second time I've had this problem. Every two or three minutes OE opens,
occasionally in the background, occasionally over top of an open window. As
a result I leave it open and minimized. Happens in both identities, online
and off. I've rebooted and system restored to two days prior to this
happening but no change. Last time the system restore resolved it for a few
weeks. I generally compact every 30 or so openings but I'm reluctant to do
so with this happening. Have not recently downloaded or installed anything.
Spybot, AdAware SE, Spyware Blaster, CW Shredder, Zone Alarm free and AVG
free (email scanneer off), all updated show nothing.
Default folders very small and created folders are all well below 100MB.
TIFs empty. No problems using OE or opening mesages.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
XP home, patched except for IE7

Terry

Thanks Robear. I have one question, if you could help.
Once I run all the preliminary checks and assuming I still have the below
problem, can I and should I run Hijack This in safe mode? At present even if
I close OE it will reopen before Hijack would complete. Or is there a way to
temporarily close OE?
Thanks
Terry

Don't worry about OE being open when you scan. It'd be preferable to scan
HijackThis in normal (Windows) mode. When you post your log to the forum,
be sure to state that OE's opening on its own accord and that's why it's
seen as a running Process in the log.

Thanks again, Robear
My delay in repying is due to running the various scans - including Windows
Defender's full system scan in safe mode. After running them (no problems
reported), the problem persists. I'll run Hijack This and post to Ahuma and
await my turn. Thanks to all of you who help and offer your time to
interpret the results.
