How do I configure hotmail to accept messages from a non hotmail server,

I have the Qwest DSL with MSN Premium service. This gets me a "free" Qwest
Mail by Windows Live account. This is the successor to Hotmail web access,
and Qwest seems to think it is out of beta. Under mail options, there is a
button to do this:

"Receive mail from accounts with POP3 access With POP3, you can use Qwest
Mail to send and receive e-mail from up to four e-mail accounts. After you
set up the account, you can create a filter to move messages sent to the
POP3 address into a folder..."

I assume that all Hotmail accounts will gain this ability, once they become
Windows Live accounts. Your mileage may differ.

Thanks all of you for your responses but I still believe that hotmail can be
configured to accept non hotmail accounts having previously seen an article
describing the process (Cannot locate the source). What happened prior to
Live hotmail?

We're all getting older. ;^) I too "remember" having previously read
articles that I can never find later.

Afaik, Hotmail is turning into Windows Live Mail, or Live Hotmail, whatever
they want to call it, which can harvest mail from pop3 accounts. If yours
hasn't converted yet, there should be a button offering to do it for you.

Kind of .. The terminology and history can get confusing and run on
top of each other.

Hotmail becomes Windows Live Hotmail

Windows Live Mail is a new free email client from Msft that is an
alternative to OE, OL and Vista's Windows Mail capable of both http and
pop3 retrieval unlike OE and OL which only provides pop3 and fee based
http access, and unlike Vista's client which only is pop3 capable. A
separate download and install is required to obtain Windows Live Mail
i.e. it is not a conversion based. Installation of Windows Live Mail in
XP or Vista will replace the shortcuts(startmenu, orb menu, programs
menu) for OE or Windows Mail.

At one time Hotmail free had a pop3 retrieval option that was later on
available in fee based pop3 accounts. Hotmail Classic's interface for a
fee based http account provided pop3 retrieval but was limited to port
110 and without SSL security encryption. Windows Live Hotmail's
interface when used with a fee based http account provides pop3
retrieval with the option to manually configure the port and SSL
settings.

The user apparently found a way to forward mail to overcome the
shortcomings of the free Hotmail interface.

Found a very simple way to do it. Just work from the other end and have your
non hotmail provider foward them to your hotmail account.

For a Windows Live account using their webmail interface, go into
Options (More) and click on the "Send and receive mail from other
e-mail accounts". Read the instructions. Notice that what they are
offering in the freebie account is: (1) You can change the From header
in your outbound messages so they look like they came from a different
account; or, (2) Info on how you need to setup *forwarding* in your
OTHER accounts to get those mails sent over to your Hotmail account.
One just lets you change your From header (to a verified address).
The second is NOT a feature of Hotmail but instead only works if your
other POP3 providers include a forwarding feature.

Microsoft discontinued providing a "yank" option to pull mails from
other providers' POP3 servers for freebie Hotmail accounts several
years ago.
