On both of my desktops, this works as expected. On my laptop, however,
selecting the paperclip on a outgoing email brings up an INSERT ATTACHMENT
window showing only ..

... Power Options
... Shared Documents
These (plus the Recycle Bin) are all I keep on my desktop. There is no way
to browse to the desired file. For example, if I double click on Shared
Documents (which includes a shortcut to my personal file strucure), the
Shared Documents folder is not opened; it is attached to the email!

Also: Since it seems to insist on putting me at the desktop, I added a
shortcut-to-my-files on the desktop. Now the attach window includes that
shortcut, but if I dobule-click it, it attaches the shortcut instead of
opening it to get at it's contents.

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity (File
Identities Add new identity). Assuming all is well, (1) compact all
folders in the old identity, (2) import messages from the old identity into
the new one, and then (3) delete the old one (File Identities Manage
Identities).

To avoid such corruption in futu

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

What else works? E.g. I can navigate by pressing F4 or by typing
in the File: box. For example, to navigate to your My Documents folder
you may be able to type: %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\
If you wait a bit you may even see it drop down in an AutoComplete fashion.

Of course. That's what I would expect it should do.


BTW if you have to navigate somewhere to do an attachment why not just
drag it onto your composition window and bypass that silly dialog?
Hint: if it is in a folder that you use frequently you could put a shortcut to that
into your Quick Launch tray or create a keyboard shortcut for opening it, etc.
In the case of My Documents there is already a shortcut in the Start menu.
FWIW that's in the Start menu Properties, Customize Start Menu, Advanced tab.
Apparently there is even an option in there to display it "as a menu". Who knew? eg
