I am using Outlook Express 6.0 with the following configurations:
Windows XP Home Edition, IE 7.0 Office 2003 Mozilla Thunderbird (this was the default for email messages, but I changed it to Outlook Express). eTrust Antivirus When I try to create an email message, I receive the following error: There was an error opening the message. An error has occured. When I click on the address book, I receive the following error: Unable to open the address book. The address book may not be installed properly. Any help would be appreciated. |

All of those have the same cause. Something is screwed up with your
address book. It could be any of several specific problems, which include: - corrupted WAB file - corrupted or mismatched DLL files for the address book - having OE set to use the Outlook98/2000+ contacts instead of the WAB file and there is something wrong at the Outlook end For specifics, take a look at: Err Msg: The Message Could Not Be Sent. Some recipients not valid (Outlook Express: There was an error opening this message) (The Address Book failed to load. OE is incorrectly configured) (Corrupted or mismatched WAB32.DLL file) http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=239135 OLEXP: Error Message: Address Book Failed to Load (There was an error opening this message) http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=269777 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310873 OLEXP: MSIMN Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module Wab32.dll http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=247706 Err Msg: Address Book Failed To Load, Outlook Express Is... http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=191946 Err Msg: Unable to Open Address Book, a Component Is Missing http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=192321 The Windows Address Book (WAB) http://www.insideoe.com/files/wab.htm To share Contacts between Outlook and Outlook Express http://www.slipstick.com/contacts/oeshare.htm -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "DeeW" wrote in message ... What have I tried thus far:
Checked and the read-only check box was already clear for the *.wab file Removed Outlook Express 6.0, delete the registry entry indicated, reinstalled Outlook Express. Open Outlook Express, clicked to create a new message and it attempted to open, but after about 15 seconds, I received the error message that I initially reported. Uninstalled Outlook Express 6.0. Attempted to rename the Outlook Express folder, but was unable to do so. Messages indicated that another program was using a file. I rebooted the computer, but was unsuccessul in renaming the folder. I am not using Outlook CW mode. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. This problem occured about 4 weeks ago and Mozilla Thunderbird was installed as an alternative to OE. The only thing I really need is to get the addresses from the address book. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Poprivet" wrote: DeeW wrote: I am using Outlook Express 6.0 with the following configurations: Windows XP Home Edition, IE 7.0 Office 2003 Mozilla Thunderbird (this was the default for email messages, but I changed it to Outlook Express). eTrust Antivirus When I try to create an email message, I receive the following error: There was an error opening the message. I was able to figure it out by doing the following:
Click Start, point to Run, in the Open box type regedit, and then click OK. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Wab\Wab4 In the right pane, double-click UseOutlook, and then change the value from 0 to 1. Click OK, and the close the Registry Editor. I was able to create a new message and access the address book and did not receive an error message. Thanks for your help. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "DeeW" wrote: What have I tried thus far: Checked and the read-only check box was already clear for the *.wab file Removed Outlook Express 6.0, delete the registry entry indicated, reinstalled Outlook Express. You're welcome.
Be prepared to repeat this if you install any updates for MS Outlook (not Outlook Express) in the future. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.org/ DeeW wrote: I was able to figure it out by doing the following: Click Start, point to Run, in the Open box type regedit, and then click OK. Sorry, but I have another question that is related to this issue. I noticed
that when I changed this setting, it causes the Outlook 2003 and OE6 address books to be shared. If I change the value to back of 0, I am unable to access the address book. Is there a way to unrelate the two applications and still be able to access the OE6 address book. ------------------------------------------------------- "PA Bear" wrote: You're welcome.
