Default Canno delete emails

I don't think it is a particular message or this would be a problem as soon
as you open OE. Don't worry about the Pop3uidl.dbx file. That comes into
play if you are receiving duplicate messages, which you are not.

Delete all messages you don't need from all default OE folders. Empty the
Inbox, Sent Items, Drafts and Deleted Items by moving the contents to local
folders you create and then close OE and delete the corresponding dbx files
in the message store. New ones will be created when you open OE.

Please heed the following and make sure you reboot and test OE before
posting back, unless you encounter a problem.

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

And backup often.

Sorry about not starting a new thread. I'm not used to participating in
discussion groups, only do it when necessary which isn't often.

I will try what you recommended, just will take a while as I have a lot of
weeding out to do. Is it likely just the folder that is corrupt and not
an
individual message(s) causing it? If it is the folder I guess I could
move
everything to a unique folder and weed it out later. If it is individual
messages causing it then I will have to see if I can get rid of
everything.
I did try this with the Inbox only earlier and thought I had cured the
problem but then it crept up again.

Do I need to delete the Pop3uidl.dbx (as you suggested to an earlier
post)?
What is that folder for?

If you don't mind, one more question ... am I getting a good backup of my
email folders if I copy the complete Outlook Express folder (using
Explore)
to my backup disk?

Thanks for your help,
Char...

Please start your own new thread in the future.

Move all messages you want to save out of the Inbox and Deleted Items to
local folders you create. Follow that with a compact All Folders. Now,
delete the dbx files for both with OE closed.

I seems to have a similar but different problem. OE seems to run fine
for
a
while and then (and usually when I try to delete an email) it just does
nothing after I click on the delete button. And then when I go to
another
email, it comes up with a blank screen, cannot display the message. If
I
go
to another folder, I get nothing. I can close OE and go back in again
and
it
will again function for a while until everything repeats. Does it
sound
like
your solution given here will work for this situation?

This is a POP# account I assume?

First, make sure there are no messages you want to keep in Deleted
Items.
In
Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced, make sure "Leave a
copy........." is not checked. Close OE and delete Deleted Items.dbx
and
Pop3uidl.dbx from the message store. New files will be created when
you
open
OE and the messages will download one more time, but that should do
it.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location
of
your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder
location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put
the
location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise,
write
the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by
default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must
enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder
Options
Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.

With OE closed, find the DBX file for Deleted Items and Pop3uidl and
delete
them. A new one will be created automatically when you open OE.

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and
move
your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually
while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders
are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything
until
the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant
layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems
such
as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program
will

All of a sudden I received multiple copies of the same emails. I
could
delete most of them but some will not delete.

Would appreciate your help.
