Default Problem - single clicks instead of double clicks

I don't show the preview pane (and don't want to).

But I want to open a message by double clicking on it.
For some reason, each message opens if I single click on it.
I have my folder options set to double click. It takes a double
click to activate each short cut icon on desktop so I don't understand
why my email messages are opening with a single click.

thanks for help!!
