Default EML Files - Missing .exe file

Thanks for that, I can see the 'msimn.exe' file in the OE folder now. I have
done the file association, but when I try to open the .emf file now, it
minimises the mail message its attached to, and then nothing else happens.

Have read this whole thread. Now that you know that the file attachments are
'.eml', not '.emf', *and* you know that the .exe file is 'msimn.exe', not
'msimx.exe', my question is simply, are you opening your email with MS
Outlook Express 6? If so, how can you be doing that without 'msimn.exe' on
the file system?

You say you can't see 'msimn.exe' in your C:\Program Files\Outlook Express
folder. Well, neither can I. At least with Folder Options | View configured
as I normally have it. To see 'msimn.exe' in your folder change your View
options: "Show hidden files and folders" *AND* uncheck "Hide protected
operating system files".

Once you have verified that you *can* see 'msimn.exe', and you have
associated the '.eml' files with 'msimn.exe', you should return your Folder
Options View configuration to "Hide protected operating system files".

This I've done, but it doesn't open the attachment, just minimises the mail
message instead, and nothing else happens...

"Bruce Hagen" wrote:

Your first post said emf files, hence my suggesting a program.

Save an .eml attachment to your HDD. Right click on it and Open With |
Choose Program. Find and choose a program that works, Outlook Express, and
then check the box: Always use this program to open this kind of file. This
should enable you to open these attachments in the future.

Yes, I have recently installed Windows Live Mail, but I have now uninstalled
it, so OE is my main email program. But it still won't open the .eml files
after doing the file association.

It minimizes it to the Taskbar when you click on the attachment? Then do
this.

Right click on the minimized message on the Taskbar and select Move. Now use
the arrow keys to get it in the screen. Close all other windows except this
one and use the cursor to drag the message to full screen size. File | Exit,
and Windows will remember the size when you open it again.

Sorry my mistake. It doesn't minimise the message its attached to, nor does
the attachment open. It brings OE (with all the mail essages and folders) to
the front. As this is "msimn.exe" .eml is associated with?

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled.
