Hi,
I have Windows XP installed on my computer & recently installed MS Office
Word & Excel. I was told & have read that by doing so the spelling icon in
Outlook Express would be active. Unfortunatly it's still grayed out. Any
thoughts?

Steven

What version of Office did you install?

Outlook Express program does not come with a spell checker. It will use
the spell checker from any of several Microsoft 32-bit programs. For
Word/Office, that would be versions 95 through 2003. Version 2007 is
not compatible with OE. For Works, that would be versions 4 through 6.
If using Works 4.0, a registry change is required. The Works 7+ spell
checker is not compatible with Outlook Express. There are also some
freeware/shareware spell checkers that work (see the URL in my
signature).

Office 2007 RTM Issues:
After installing Office 2007 RTM, you don't have English as a choice of
language in the spell checker of Outlook Express and potentially other
programs.

You no longer have spell checking capabilities in some languages in
Outlook Express 6.0 after you install the 2007 Microsoft Office system

For Office/Word97 on WinXP, this seems to be the common cause:

Office 2007 spelling checker does not work with OE.

Free spellchecker.
which I use on my laptop, which has Works.

And here's a freeware that checks your spelling as you type:

I don't know why it's grayed out, but that's a moot point since the only
language you would have is French with Office 2007.

You no longer have spell checking capabilities in some languages in Outlook
Express 6.0 after you install the 2007 Microsoft Office system:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932974

Office 2007 breaks OE's spell check. Downloading a free spell check is the
simplest way around this.

TinySpell:

If you have a previous version of Office, see this:

Try Wordweb, it's Great and it's FREE. Use it alone or with other
spellcheckers in ms office.
