My Dad uses OE and is having the following problem: When he replies to
messages in his Inbox, the message he replied to is deleted. (It still exists in his Sent Items folder.) I've searched on possible causes but can't find anything obvious. I had him turn off his virus checker in case that was causing it, but it didn't change anything. Any advice much appreciated. Thanks, Andrew |

Check again about the antivirus stuff. See www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3
After turning off the AV email scanning, then have him remove his mail account (write down the settings first), close OE and then add it back again after reopening OE. The AV software often changes the account settings, so you may need to do that. Or try going to File | Identities and set up a new Identity and make sure email scanning is disabled before adding the account. Also make sure he's got the the inbox set to View | Current View | Show all messages. It could be the messages are still there, but he's got it set to hide read messages. steve wrote in message ups.com... Make sure in View | Current View: Show all messages & Group messages by
conversation is checked. If that's OK the Inbox, or identity may be damaged. Move any mail you wish to save from the Inbox to a local folder you create. Then: Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer. In WindowsXP, 2K & 3K, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options | View. With OE closed, find the DBX file for the folder in question {Inbox.dbx} and delete it. A new one will be created automatically when you open OE. Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}. If that does not fix it: You may have a damaged identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it. If all is well, you can import your messages from the old identity and delete it. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ wrote in message ups.com...
