Recently Outlook Express 6.0 has become very unstable on both computers in
our household. Out of the blue OE will not display any messages . . . just a screen that says this message can't be displayed. Sometimes the entire toolbar just grays out. Usually backing out of the program and restarting it fixes the problem . . . for a while. Other times it is necessary to reboot the computer. I suspect that this problem showed up after an update. From looking around I think I'm not the only one having problem. Can anyone tell me if anything is being done to repair the problem? Thanks, Rick |

Low memory as well? No, you're not alone.
This is a problem that started in September and has yet to be figured out. Please monitor this link for developments, but please don't add your problem to it. If a fix is found, you will see it here or in this newsgroup. [Not so quick on the draw there, please, Bruce]
Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity (File Identities Add new identity). Assuming all is well, (1) compact all folders in the old identity, (2) import messages from the old identity into the new one, and then (3) delete the old one (File Identities Manage Identities). To avoid such corruption in futu - Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm - WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is automatically compacting your message store. - Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.org/ Rick Morrison wrote: Recently Outlook Express 6.0 has become very unstable on both computers in our household. Thanks, Rick Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML files from the scan. It provides no protection not provided by the regular resident protection. Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. -- Frank Saunders MS-MVP IE,OE/WM www.fjsmjs.com Do not send email |

![]() This seems to be a generic update problem. Mine started a number of days ago. I was at a customers house this morning and she started getting the exact problem a number of days ago. There are too many reports of this just happening to too many people for it to be a specific a PC or configuration problem. I am now certain that it is a Microsoft update. I wish I knew the update KB number so I could delete it. It was reported on Microsoft's forum that it was KB929123 but I do not have that update installed and I have the problem. -- Nospam "Frank Saunders MS-MVP IE,OE/WM" wrote in message ... Please begin a new thread about /your/ problem.
PS: According to your post's headers, 929123 is installed. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.org/ belsouth.news Away wrote: This seems to be a generic update problem. This is the exact problem as described in the original post of "Outlook
Express Unstable" 10/29/07 . Why have two posts if the problem is exactly as described in the original post. The information I got about KB929123 was from a Microsoft forum. I don't see it in the my add programs of the control panel and I don't know if removing the update will correct the problem. But it is not just my problem I have gotten feedback from a number of customers who just started having the same problem and that is why I suspect an update. All the users so far are using XP and have single core hardware. Instead of starting a new post I would rather just follow the original thread and if or when they find the solution to that post I will try it on my system. If Microsoft is unable to resolve the problem I guess I will have to use another email client, but I am willing to wait and see if they can find the problem and resolve it. -- Nospam "PA Bear" wrote in message ...
