clicking SEND/RECEIVE brings in my mail but refuses to SEND messages. This problem just started yesterday and I have not changed my settings or info. Getting this error message: Server: smtp.iinet.com protocol: SMTP, Port 25, secure(SSL) No. socket Error: 10053 Error number: 0x800CCC0F Thanks in advance for any help. My dad just called me whining about a similar problem. I have to note we just installed the latest Norton's System Works yesterday so I suspect I know what the answer may be. Now just now, I told him to reboot and he was able to send his mail out. Then he wrote a third message and it wouldn't send. Here's his error: "The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'Hal's Mail', Server: 'smtp.charter.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E". My old man is 84 years old, so any instructions need to be pretty specific. -- Mortimer Schnerd, RN mschnerdatcarolina.rr.com |

You more than likely did answer your own question. Norton & McAfee do not work well with OE for many people. I would suggest either Avast, (freeware), or NOD32, (not free). You more than likely did answer your own question. Norton & McAfee do not work well with OE for many people. I would suggest either Avast, (freeware), or NOD32, (not free). To remove Norton completely: I solved the problem today and here's how: the thoughts of deleting Norton's was extremely unpalatable since we just got through paying $79 for it and spent considerable time installing it with my heart in my throat, since I was doing it long distance via PCAnywhere. It's always a crapshoot when you run an installation with anything else going. Also, Norton's had warned me early in the installation process that it often had problems with Zone Alarm and suggested it be removed first, then install Norton's, then reinstall Zone Alarm. If I'd been sitting in front of my dad's computer, I'd have been willing to do all that. But I had visions to opening a can of worms I couldn't handle from a distance and so chose to take my chances. So anyway, I installed Norton's and shortly after my father calls me with the tale of woe about not being able to send emails. He could receive but not send. I went into Norton's and disabled the outbound mail scan. No joy. I re-enabled it since it seemed to make no difference. I read on the internet suggestions about seeing if you could telnet the server directly. Telnet failed trying to connect to both the POP server and the SMTP server. What next? I remembered the warning about Zone Alarm and turned it off. Bingo! The mail operated perfectly again. But this was an imperfect solution as my dad needs a firewall. I started it up again. The outbound mail jammed again. I went into the program settings and made sure that Outlook Express had the three stripes of a trusted application and I had check marks across the board (one of them had been blank). Then I went to Zone Alarm's email tab and turned off the outbound scanning. Eureka! Everything now works as it should. Windows XP Pro SP2 Norton's Systemworks 2008 Zone Alarm Pro v7.0.337 Something to add to your bag of tricks. I appreciate you trying though... particularly doing it so quickly. -- Mortimer Schnerd, RN mschnerdatcarolina.rr.com |

E-mail scanning in and out should always be disabled. Is this version of ZA have an anti-virus? You should not have two AVs running at the same time, nor should you have two firewalls running at the same time. I can understand you not wanting to throw away the $79.00 you paid, but I have had new machines with free 90 day trials of Norton and McAfee and in all cases, I removed the programs before setting up the computer. If there are e-mail issues in the future, look at Norton first. It can work fine for a long time and then suddenly, perhaps from a Symantec update, everything goes to hell. In some cases, Norton and McAfee have been responsible for wiping out the entire message store. I use Avast, and the Windows firewall with a router and I have never been attacked in any form. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA |

Throwing away a freebie isn't the same as throwing away a $79 update to a program that has done yeoman service up until yesterday. If there are e-mail issues in the future, look at Norton first. It can work fine for a long time and then suddenly, perhaps from a Symantec update, everything goes to hell. In some cases, Norton and McAfee have been responsible for wiping out the entire message store. I've had that experience with McAfee... which is why I'm with Norton's now. And it works fine on my computer here. -- Mortimer Schnerd, RN mschnerdatcarolina.rr.com |
