I can create a new root IMAP folder in OE6 on my work machine by right
clicking the IMAP account in the left pane and selecting new folder. I do the same thing at home and the folder always ends up under the Inbox as a sub folder. Both machines are running OE6 and WinXP. Any ideas what the difference may be? Thanks, Brett |

A new _root_ IMAP folder? Don't you have to create a new IMAP account in order to do that? Other than that, the only thing that I can think of is whether you are actually logged in on your IMAP server. AFAIK, you can't create an IMAP folder unless you are logged in on the server. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

After playing with my IMAP accounts, I am really stumped. If I right click on the IMAP account name, the folder is created on the tree as a branch from the account name. I can't induce the creation of a folder as an Inbox subfolder in an IMAP account. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

I really have no idea what the quack. I did a folder reset on the home
machine to get a new folder I created at work. That went fine. Then I did a test folder creation. That went fine also. Maybe the folder reset did it. Something qerky was going on. Brett |

Thanks, Brett You can't create a root IMAP folder unless you create a new IMAP mail account then of course you have to have the account already set up. The only thing I can think of that happened was the Folders.dbx file may be just confused enough to not place it correctly. It is what contains the folder structure for all accounts. Something you can do to test if it might be corrupt is to File | Folders | Compact All and see if you get an error then move that dialog box out of the way to see what file it was working on at the time. If it's Folders.dbx, there is your problem. You would have close OE, navigate to the message store folder then rename Folders.dbx to Folders.old then restart OE and let it rebuild a new one. Also, if this is the Main Identity, you may want to create a new Identity and use it instead. |

If I rename folders.dbx to folders.old and it creates a new one, how do
I get everything from folders.old into the new one? Also, is periodically running Compact All a good maintenance? Will it help avoid problems in other words? Thanks, Brett |

brett wrote: If I rename folders.dbx to folders.old and it creates a new one, how do I get everything from folders.old into the new one? Folders.dbx is not a file that contains messages. IOW, there's nothing to "get" from the old one to put into the new one. (By closing OE and deleting or renaming FOlders.dbx, you will lose the mail tree structure, all lists of newsgroups, and all synchronization options, and any message rules will likely need to be edited.) Also, is periodically running Compact All a good maintenance? Will it help avoid problems in other words? Yes, it's a MUST. General OE Caveats: - Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm. - Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only). - Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Shell/User, Security), Aumha.org VSOP, DTS-L.org |

ups.com... If I rename folders.dbx to folders.old and it creates a new one, how do I get everything from folders.old into the new one? The structure of the mail folders (names and location (subfolder type, etc), available newsgroups for each news account and subcscriubed newsgroups for each news account are what is in Folders.dbx. Other than that, there is nothing you want to get from it. Also, is periodically running Compact All a good maintenance? Will it help avoid problems in other words? Only after a good backup would I compact. While in most cases it does fullfills it's purpose, remove old data from the dbx files, it can screw up the whole thing. Personally I"ve seen a compact lose all messages. That's where a good backup comes in handy or a good recovery program. |
