Default OutlooK Express Crashing PC

Running Win 98 SE with IE6 SP1 and OE6. Also have McAfee and Zonelabs both
with latest updates. Use BTYahoo Browser on Broadband. Stopped updating IE
Security updates last November due to many posted problems and now waiting
for the dust to settle. I have run a number of progs like Spybot etc to
check for anything and nothing major has been thrown up.
Problem. Recently OE crashes the PC when it tries to open. You get its blue
opening screen and then that is it - I have to restart the PC. Doesn't
always happen - about 50 % of the time. Inbox has no more than a screen load
of messages at any one time. I do have many folders but regularly compact
them. I have seen posts for .dbx files but have no idea of what they do or
there significance but I have a lot, I think at least 50 all with various
names, should I delete all or some of them? Should I also disable the email
monitor in McAfee? Any other ideas?

That's a serious misjudgement, Alan, which has left you open to
vulnerabilities which *may* be causing your problems! (Having McAfee
VirusScan and ZA running when you install updates can cause problems.)

Don't delete any DBX files just yet.

Start he http://www.insideoe.com/problems/errors.htm#crash

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if
Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only).

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

You are probably now infested with malware. Remove the malware and then
visit Windows Updates.
