using OE6 with XP
why does a pic added as an attachment to an email also appear in message text even with 'Send Pictures with Message' unchecked and with 'Plain Text' selected |

That is a copy of the attachment, (jpg, gif, or bmp), which is displayed
/after/ the message body. and that is how OE has always worked. However, if you are reading in Plain Text, you won't see it. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA "TFITZP" wrote in message ... using OE6 with XP why does a pic added as an attachment to an email also appear in message text even with 'Send Pictures with Message' unchecked and with 'Plain Text' selected |

The send picture with message option only applies to HTML format when
you do the Insert Picture (not Insert File Attachment). If you don't check the Send Picture.in that case, OE sends a link to the picture rather than including the picture with the message. That will work OK if you were referencing an image on a web server or shared LAN server. Otherwise it will be pointing to a file on your hard drive. Unless the recipient already has the picture on their hard drive at the same location, they won't get anything and OE will display a box with a red X. Now to your real question. By default, OE displays any image attachments (JPG, GIF, BMP) at the bottom of the message text. This is a display only (not a duplicate attachment) and only affects what you see on your PC, not what the recipient sees. Whether the recipients also automatically see the image is dependent on their mail program and its settings. To change whether or not you automatically see the images on your PC, see the following article: Outlook Express Slide Show OE5, OE6 http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/slideshow.htm In the case of OE6, if the "Automatically Inline Images" key is missing, it can be added with a value of 0 to disable display of images at the bottom of the message text. Not having the key or setting it to 1 enables display. Note: In Windows XP SP2 or Windows 2003 SP1, when Tools, Options, Read, Read All Message In Plain Text is selected, that also stops the display of images. many thanks Michael for a lucid rundown
dont recall this 'image with the text' feature with OE in the past but maybe i forget seems a pointless feature - why have aload of pics in text with attach files as well registry fix is interesting - but wont kill pics shown for recipient to get a message with text only i have used compressed files as attachment cheers terry "Michael Santovec" wrote: The send picture with message option only applies to HTML format when you do the Insert Picture (not Insert File Attachment).
