I receive the e mail but cannot open the attachment. In fact the paper clip
indicating an attachment to the email disappears when I click on it with no
response or error message.

this did not work. I also tried mozilla thunderbird to accept attachments,
but again no success. When I try to open them they just disappear

Do a Ctrl+F3 on a message and see if it actually contains an attachment. AVG
often shows a paper clip when no attachment is actually present due to the
way their e-mail scanning works.

Reinstall AVG and choose Custom Mode. Uncheck E-mail Scanning when you see
that option. For some reason, just unchecking it in the security center
causes a conflict with the Windows Security Center.

Make sure you reboot when you're done.
