Last night my OE 6 crashed, losing most of my messages in all folders. I
was able to recover some of them, but there are still some folders that are
stored in the OE file, but do not show up in the application itself. I
tried import, but all I can get back are some of the local folders (and
there doesn't seem to be much difference between those that did re-appear
and those that did not). I tried setting up a new identity and importing
with the same result. When I go to the storage folder and try to open the
specific local file, it just puts me into OE with the existing local
folders. If I try to create a new local folder with the name of the stored
folder, OE attaches a (1) to the file name (and it then shows up in the
storage folder along with the regular file of the same name).

This is not the first time this has happened to me, but in the past I was
able to recover most of the folders. I'm beginning to wonder if I should
give up on OE and move to gmail or some other web based mail service. But
first I want to get my message back. Any suggestions?

If this is not the first time, why haven't you started to backup OE daily?

This freeware tool backs up everything in OE in seconds. Disregard what is
written in red. That is referring to a different program.

If you have dbx folders in the message store, but no folder in OE, then try
the following foe each, one-at-a-time.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of
your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder
location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the
location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write
the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable Show
Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options |
View.

In Windows Explorer, click on the dbx file for the missing folder and drag
it to the Desktop. Open OE and create a folder with the *exact* same name as
the one on your Desktop. Open the new folder and then close OE. Go back to
Windows Explorer and Click Desktop and drag the file from the Desktop to the
OE store folder that you clicked on to reveal the .dbx files. Prompt - "Do
you want to overwrite......."? Click Yes.

I do back up with this program, not daily but periodically. But I can't
seem to restore with OEQB. But I will try your suggestions below.

Gmail is not a replacement for email software installed on your hard drive.
Gmail being a free web based service means that you have no guarantees of
service and your account can be terminated at any time for any reason.
Recommend you use it along side a regular email client but not instead of.

I recommend you drop OE. There are many email clients that are more secure
and reliable than OE.

A small list of email clients: Thunderbird, Opera, Pegasus, 40tude Dialog,
and there are others.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll try Thunderbird, since I use
Mozilla as my browser. It seems to have all the features I want:
identities, integrated news reader, and compatible with BOTH XP and Vista.
