Default Compacting folders

I noticed in one of the newsletters, instructions on how to compact oe
folders.
Can someone give me an idea as to why a person would want to do this? As an
extension of this, why would one want to compact news folders.

Deleted messages and posts remain on the hard disk - until you compact.

No matter how many messages you delete from a folder, it just keeps growing
until you compact it. Eventually it just stops working. Compacting removes
wasted space, it does not compress the data.

Always make up a backup before compacting. But then, you do that at least
once a week, don't you.

Thanks for the replies, and the "dig" re. back up!!! It is a good reminder,
that I have to get a better system in place for backups. Mine is haphazard!
