I have one person who sends attachment image files that arrive with ".email"
file suffixes. OE6 say's "unknown file type" when I attempt to open. MS Help say's it's openable with Notepad but all I can get is gibberish/code. The person claims he's also using OE? He is however forwarding the images in messages he's received from others(?). Any idea how I can get OE6 to recognize and open these files? Thanks -- Chet |

Save such a file to your hard-drive Right-click* on it Open with
Select Outlook Express (msimn.exe) and also check the "Always open with..." option. *If Win9x, use "Shift+Right-click" -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Shell/User, Security), Aumha.org VSOP, DTS-L.org Chet wrote: I have one person who sends attachment image files that arrive with ".email" file suffixes. Thks for the reply. Did it. Had to browse to OE and msimn icon. Checked
"Always Open With" Now when I double-click or right click-open on the icon on the hard drive it just opens OE6? Going to the original message and double-clicking the attachment just gets me the "Unknown File Type" message again? I must be missing something? Are you certain you chose MSIMN.EXE and not, e.g., MSOE.DLL or another
filename? -- ~PA Bear Chet wrote: Thks for the reply. Did it. Had to browse to OE and msimn icon. I chose the msimn icon in the Outlook Express Program Folder. It's the only
file there with a msimn file prefix. After I choose and attach it the changed file now has properties "Opens with Outlook Express". Double-clicking or file open just opens up Outlook Express? The person has told me other recipients are ahving the same problem so it seems to be originating at his end. Thanks for your help. -- Chet "PA Bear" wrote: Are you certain you chose MSIMN.EXE and not, e.g., MSOE.DLL or another filename? -- ~PA Bear Chet wrote: Thks for the reply. Did it. What Michael said (try changing the extension to .EML).

MS Help say's it's openable with Notepad but all I can get is gibberish/code. There must be something readable in there? (E.g. headers) The person claims he's also using OE? I think we have seen that certain ISPs have customized mailers which do this. He is however forwarding the images in messages he's received from others(?). Any idea how I can get OE6 to recognize and open these files? What happens if you drag the attachment to the OE main application window? E.g. have that window opened at the Inbox or at the Local Folders display and notice in particular in either the Status bar or the folder summary if the number of messages in the Inbox changes. If it does you can then try finding the message in that folder. It will be interleaved in there according to how it sorts within your current sort order (e.g. Alt-V,B). Of course if you keep your Inbox empty you will be able to find it right away. eg Thanks -- Chet HTH Robert Aldwinckle --- |

If I drag the attachment to "Inbox", "Drafts" or just the "Folders" pane, it
all does the same thing, immediately opens a new message with the attachment in it. Trying to open the attachment from there yields the same results - "Unknown File Type"? The person has told me other recipients are noting the same problem so it must be originating at his end, maybe his ISP as you alluded to. Dragging the attachment to the desktop yields similar results. "Unknown File Type" if I drag it there as received and try to open. Changing to "Open with Outlook Express" just opens a new message with the attachment in it? The first time I tried to help on this issue I tried simulating the problem by taking an normal E-mail from my Inbox and saving it as Test.email Then I attached that to another E-mail. I can't remember if I bothered trying to actually send that or not but I can definitely remember that I was able to drag the attachment to the Inbox and it appeared there just as if it might have arrived and been read. And as I indicated because the message I chose to attach was older than the other messages in my Inbox and because I sort my Inbox by date that message appeared other than the latest addition to my Inbox. Since that was some time ago, probably with a different version of OE, I just did another related test to confirm that dragging an .eml attachment to my Inbox still results in that E-mail appearing listed in my Inbox. I think you should do these same two tests to at least confirm that OE's Filetype associations aren't broken. In fact, you could also try re-registering them anyway. E.g. close all OE windows (and verify that msimn.exe is not an active process in Task Manager) then Run... (e.g. press Win-R) and enter: msimn.exe /reg BTW don't expect any feedback from that command. Our assumption has been that whatever this attachment is, it would be a legitimate E-mail just saved with a different extension. If that is not the case (e.g. a different MIME type is being used or something like that) both this assumption and my simulation will be invalid. Then the only thing you will be able to do with it is save it as a text file OR if you figured out what the incompatibility was possibly easily converting it to an E-Mail format that OE accepts. Thanks for the help! Good luck Robert --- |

I was going to ask some time ago if the attachment is actually valid... if
the content is garbage then OE probably will just open in some undetermined state, if not garbage then it should open that file as long as .email has been set properly in file type (using the "Always open using) option. My guess is that there something amiss with the actual content. Charlie "Robert Aldwinckle" wrote in message ... "Chet" wrote in message ...
