It sounds as if folders.dbx is messed up. Try going to File | Identities
and set up a new Identity and verify you don't have the same problems
there. Then use File | Import | Messages and point to the older Identity
and see if that fixes it.

The only difference is that now there is a "0 KB" in the "size" column.

The letters I know that I never opened are still in Boldface type and
the ones that I have opened (most of them) are not but ALL have the
"closed envelope" icon associated with all of them.

The old letters sit in a newly-created file called "new inbox folded"

I sent a test message--with an attachment-- to myself and it's in the
inbox in a normal way.

anyway I can see my old letters with the "opened" icon and what size
files were associated with them?

Start here. Create a local folder and move all the mail from the Inbox
to that folder and then compact your folders.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders
are open. Then: FileWork Offline (or double click Working Online in
the Status Bar).
FileFolderCompact all folders. Don't touch anything until the
compacting is completed.

Reboot and see what the mail looks like in the new folder. If that is
OK, send a test e-mail to yourself and see what that looks like in the
Inbox. If the problem still exists, the Inbox may be damaged, but
we'll deal with that later.
