Default all inbox files changed to "unread" mode

Getting ready to import messages into my new identity, it says "import from
main identity" and I balked because I have this vision of everything in my
inbox/sent/and other folders in my main identity transferring over to the
new identity--which I don't necessarily want to use--and somehow something
getting lost in the process. Can't I just specify to inport just one folder
from my main identity to test things out first?

thank you Steve,

It sounds as if folders.dbx is messed up. Try going to File | Identities
and set up a new Identity and verify you don't have the same problems
there. Then use File | Import | Messages and point to the older Identity
and see if that fixes it.

One solution is for me to systematically open all 1100 of my messages and

Thanks for trying to help me Bruce.

I wonder if anyone else knows how to fix or...at least how to prevent it
from happening again.

Okaaay, Bruce, I did everything you said and

The only difference is that now there is a "0 KB" in the "size" column.

The letters I know that I never opened are still in Boldface type and
the ones that I have opened (most of them) are not but ALL have the
"closed envelope" icon associated with all of them.

The old letters sit in a newly-created file called "new inbox folded"

I sent a test message--with an attachment-- to myself and it's in the
inbox in a normal way.

anyway I can see my old letters with the "opened" icon and what size
files were associated with them?

Start here. Create a local folder and move all the mail from the Inbox
to that folder and then compact your folders.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders
are open. Then: FileWork Offline (or double click Working Online in
the Status Bar).
FileFolderCompact all folders. Don't touch anything until the
compacting is completed.

Reboot and see what the mail looks like in the new folder. If that is
OK, send a test e-mail to yourself and see what that looks like in the
Inbox. If the problem still exists, the Inbox may be damaged, but
we'll deal with that later.

I'm not sure what I did (THIS time) but in OE all my opened emails in
my IN box have converted to UNREAD only this time they give no
indication that there is or isn't an attachment associated with the
letters (no little paper clip).

Is there anyway I can "convert them back" to where my inbox was
before this latest debacle?

thanks in advance OE Pros...

Can you create a new folder in your old identity that you can stand to lose?
Copy some messages to it and then follow the instructions below for
restoring a folder.

In Windows Explorer, click on the dbx file and drag it to the Desktop. Open
OE and create a folder with the *exact* same name as the one on your
desktop. ***Copy a message from any folder to the new one. You MUST do
this.*** Close OE. Go back to Windows Explorer and Click Desktop and drag
the folder from the Desktop to the OE store folder that you clicked on to
reveal the .dbx files. Prompt - "Do you want to overwrite......."? Click
Yes.

It wouldn't hurt to backup everything too. You should do this on a regular
basis in case you lose messages for any reason.

It should give you the option to choose which folders to import. If it
doesn't, don't import from an identity but from a directory and then it will
give you that option.
