Symptom: all changes to layout settings are restored when exiting OE and
started again. Primarily my intension was to disable the preview pane. But I tried other layout settings like adding new columns or change the location of preview pane. All changes that I do work well during the OE session is on, but when I exit OE and start it again, all changes are lost: preview pane is back etc. Regarding preview pane the flags in menu View-layout.. are really restored. I was using main identity and as per recommendation in other threads I tried creating new identity but same results. All other windows accounts in my PC have the same problem. The security settings in OE is 'use retricted zone' and in IE settings scripts are disabled. Is there a registry entry that I could change for disabling the preview pane or at least see if had changed when I change settings in OE. I have a feeling that OE is not saving them at all but rather 'applied', which in Windows programs usually means temporary change that last the session only. My system is XP/SP2 but windows and OE language is not english. All Windows updates should be OK (Windows update works normally). What can I do, except go for another email client program? br: Kimmo |

Yes, you were right Frank! My firewall program prevented the layout changes.
You can add to your list F-Secure Internet Security 2007. I disabled the Spam control from FIS2007 temporarily, made the layout changes in OE, and changes were kept when restarted OE again. I switched FIS2007 SPAM control again, and saving OE layout changes was not possible anymore. In many threads of this forum, it has been recommended NOT to use SPAM control of firewall product with statement "does not add value". I disagree; now when I know the my firewall product is preventing preview pane to be set on by malware or by myself accidentally, I consider that a good value. Of course the negative value is, that I had no clue this would be the reason for not allowing me to control my OE layout as well. I'll report to F-Secure support to either solve the problem or at least guiding the user more what are the impacts of using SPAM control addition to obvious SPAM control. I'd guess, the problem also applies FIS2008 version. For other FIS2007 users: you don't need to disable whole FIS2007, just disable temporarily the SPAM control and enable it back after having made your OE layout changes. Thank's Frank for helping me to solve this problem. How did you know this? Is there a Microsoft knowledge base article about it? br: Kimmo "Frank Saunders MS-MVP IE,OE/WM" wrote: It might be a security program blocking the Registry change it needs to make. To be honest Frank, I already tried another email client as well (Mozilla
Thunderbird). I was afraid my message would be ignored if having said that in advance. Thunderbird installation converted all message folders and settings content from OE very easily. Now I can consider returning back as an OE user. br: Kimmo |

As long as your post has relevance to Outlook Express, it won't be
ignored. A lot of people here, MVPs included use non-Microsoft programs. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Kimmo" wrote in message ...
