Default Outlook Express email recovery

My OE6 abruptly closed and when I reopened it all the messages in my inbox
and the sub-folders under my inbox were gone. However, all the other folders
were okay. When I went to do a backup of OE messages, I saw that the Inbox
was quite large (total of 1,782,830 KB). Main Inbox folder is 625,611 KB and
balance is in 9 sub folders under Inbox. Please advise how do I recover the
messages? I have Windows XP.
