I do the following.

First I create a copy of the inbox.dbx file I want to restore.

I place that copy in a new folder in C: and rename it "DBX backup"

I then open the identity I for which I want to restore the "inbox mail"

I click on the "File" menu

I select "import"

I select "messages"

I select "Microsoft Outlook Express 6" from the dialog box called outlook
express import.

I select the option "import mail from an OE6 store directory" which greys
out the "import mail from OE6 identity option and hit ok.

This opens a location of messages dialog box. It says "msgs are stored in
the following location..... It's empty. I navigate to C:\DBX backup folder I
created which holds the copy of the dbx file I wanted to restore and click
"next".

Instead of restoring I get the following Import Messages Error dialog
box.... NO MESSAGES CAN BE FOUND IN THIS FOLDER OR ANOTHER APPLICATION IS
RUNNING THAT HAS THE REQUIRED FILES OPEN. PLEASE SELECT ANOTHER FOLODER OR
TRY CLOSING APPLICATIONS THAT MAY HAVE FILES OPEN.

So I go to see if I did properly place the dbx file in the folder. It is
indeed there, and it's extension is correct. I had copy and pasted from the
original. It does NOT say "read only."

I check with the windows task manager, and I cannot see any other program
that might be using the file. It would be odd that another program would be
using a dbx file anyway.

I do notice something odd in that Outlook Express in the Windows Task List
is MSIMN(2).EXE. V6.00.28. Greyed out is msimn.exe V6.00.29. Perhaps this was
created do to a system restore, but apparently I've been using the 6.00.28
version for a while.

When I started trying to restore the inbox.dbx file I tried with the
original .dbx file I eventually made the copy of. The results were the same.
The error msg. was the same. I tried with a back-up copy due to the top 10 OE
page on microsoft.

Any idea what's going on? Am I missing some little trick. I think this
problem occurred as a result of a sudden loss of power though I do have a
surge protector. So the computer itself didn't get blasted, it just suddenly
lost all power. I think OE was open when this occurred. - Thanks.

You can't import single files that way because you also need Folders.dbx to
do so. For a workaround:

Open OE and create a folder with the *exact* same name as the one for your
backup. ***Copy a message from any folder to the new one. You MUST do
this.*** Close OE. Go back to Windows Explorer and drag the backup file from
the location you have it stored to the OE store folder. Prompt - "Do you
want to overwrite......."? Click Yes.
