Default Newsgroup Problem

I have a problem with my newsgroups.

Using OE as my newsgroup reader, I get a message at the bottom:

e.g. 250 downloaded 250 unread 35 not downloaded. I cannot download the
'not downloaded' messages even if I go to tools next 500 headers.

When I leave the group, and return I get the message 0 downloaded 0
unread 35 not downloaded, and on the folder list the newsgroup is in
bold and has the number 35 in brackets. Only by doing a 'catch up' can I
remove this.

This happens with most of my subscribed news groups.

Using Thunderbird, this doesn't happen, and all messages are downloaded.

Using Win98SE and OE 6.

Hope someone can help.

It happens occasionally with Thunderbird, too. Unsubscribing and
resubscriping fixes it for me with both news readers.

Default Newsgroup Problem

Uncheck: Get XXX headers at a time. This will not put a limit on what you
get.

Don't worry about those. They are phantoms. OE is proving that
it can do arithmetic but not be logical.

When I leave the group, and return I get the message 0 downloaded 0 unread 35 not downloaded, and on the folder list the newsgroup
is in bold and has the number 35 in brackets. Only by doing a 'catch up' can I remove this.

Ok. So, you're just telling OE to ignore it's calculation.

This happens with most of my subscribed news groups.

Using Thunderbird, this doesn't happen, and all messages are downloaded.

That's because Thunderbird isn't proving that it can do arithmetic
but it can be logical. eg

Using Win98SE and OE 6.

Hope someone can help.

If you want to understand what is going on activate troubleshooting logging
for news (via Options, Maintenance tab) and look for the reply to group
request.

Good luck

I can't help you with this problem. I do have a question for you. Where do
you get your newsgroups from?
