Default OE+Hotmail issues.....

Hello All,

I have a new computer with a new install of XP Pro.

I am having trouble getting OE to connect/check with my Hotmail account.

(I realize OE support for Hotmail is gone for new accounts, but I have an
older account and having been using OE+Hotmail for the longest time. I have
it on another computer that works fine.)

I am getting this message when I check for email:

An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'Hotmail', Server:
'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol: HTTPMail,
Server Response: 'Redirect to partner', Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Error
Number: 0x80004005

Anyone know why I am getting this? The 'Redirect to Partner' has me
stumped!

Thanks for your help!

You may need to download this:

http://www.microsoft.com/Downloads/d...displaylang=en

Microsoft Office Outlook Connector will allow you to connect to any
Hotmail account, even new hotmail accounts. You will need outlook 2003
or later to use this.

Hope this helps.

Excessive & pointless crossposting eliminated.

(I realize OE support for Hotmail is gone for new accounts, but I have an
older account and having been using OE+Hotmail for the longest time. I

it on another computer that works fine.)

You can access the same account in OE on another computer or you can access
a different account in OE on another computer?

Is it a account or a account?

Is the machine fully patched at Windows Update?

What IE version are you using, IE6 or IE7?

Most of the time, the error indicates temporary problems on MSN/Hotmail's
end (despite what they may say). Here are some things you can check:

Make certain your time, date, and /time zone/ settings are correct.

IE ToolsInternet OptionsPrivacySites type in

hotmail.com
live.com

and Allow All Cookies for each domain.

How to Manage Cookies (IE6)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283185

Temporarily disable your firewall (BE CAREFUL! Enable the Windows Firewall
immediately after doing so!), any "system" tools (e.g., Trend Micro Internet
Security) and pop-up/ad blockers to see if they're interfering.

If you use a router, you may need to adjust MTU values:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315008

IE Tools Internet Options Advanced HTTP 1.1 toggle on/off; "Use HTTP
1.1 through proxy connections" must *not* be checked.

IE Tools Internet Options Security [zone in OE runs; should be
Restricted Sites] Custom Level User Authentication Logon toggle
between the setting choices here [All options EXCEPT 'Automatic logon only
in Intranet zone' work for me; currently 'Anonymous logon' is checked]

Resetting either or both of the above Tabs to the defaults might help, too.

I think he said he was using "Outlook Express"...not Outlook.

You can access the same account in OE on another computer or you can
access
a different account in OE on another computer?

I can access the SAME Hotmail account on OE on another machine at home and
on OE on another one at work

Is it a account or a account?

Is the machine fully patched at Windows Update?

Yes, I am told there are no high-priority updates available for me now.

What IE version are you using, IE6 or IE7?

I am using IE 6 and OE 6. (Like the other machines that work fine with it.)

Most of the time, the error indicates temporary problems on MSN/Hotmail's
end (despite what they may say). Here are some things you can check:
Make certain your time, date, and /time zone/ settings are correct.

Check, check & check.

IE ToolsInternet OptionsPrivacySites type in

hotmail.com
live.com

and Allow All Cookies for each domain.

Check.

Temporarily disable your firewall (BE CAREFUL! Enable the Windows Firewall
immediately after doing so!), any "system" tools (e.g., Trend Micro
Internet Security) and pop-up/ad blockers to see if they're interfering.

Check

If you use a router, you may need to adjust MTU values:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315008

This appears to involve editing the registry....I'm gonna hold off on that
for now. ;-)

IE Tools Internet Options Advanced HTTP 1.1 toggle on/off; "Use
HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections" must *not* be checked.

Check

IE Tools Internet Options Security [zone in OE runs; should be
Restricted Sites] Custom Level User Authentication Logon toggle
between the setting choices here [All options EXCEPT 'Automatic logon only
in Intranet zone' work for me; currently 'Anonymous logon' is checked]

Check

Resetting either or both of the above Tabs to the defaults might help,
too.

Check

And.....Still get that same error message:

An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'Hotmail', Server:
'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol: HTTPMail,
Server Response: 'Redirect to partner', Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Error
Number: 0x80004005

I still believe that "Redirect to Partner" should be a clue...but I can't
find anything on it.

Any more suggestions? I'd appreciate them.

(I called Microsoft, and they offerred support for a fee$$$, since it's an
OEM machine/licence.)

Access to free Hotmail accounts in OE has always been a "beta service" from
the start. There is absolutely no support.

Such problems usually clear up "automagically" over time. Until that
happens, access the account at the webmail page.

The specific error is very infrequent but not entirely unknown; cf.

Authentication fails when you use Outlook or Outlook Express to try to log
on to a HTTP-based mail server if you use Internet Explorer version 7.0:

Think you ctossposted to enough newsgroups?
