Can't tell when this happened. No new software other than some Microsoft
updates. No new
software whatsoever. No viruses.

The contact list says:

"There are no Contacts to display."

Yet, if I click on ADDRESS BOOK or do START - RUN - wab /a

The address book is still intact.

If I type an email address in a new email, the autocomplete finds said
address book entry.

The contact pane (lower left), is gone . Yes it is checked in Layout
I have reinstalled and reboot no luck!

Any suggestions?
thanks

The Contacts Pane may appear empty if the number of contacts in the Address
Book exceeds 999.

....or exceeds 99 if you have Windows Live/MSN Messenger integration enabled.

The 999 limit includes the number of contacts for the current Identity plus
the contacts in Shared Contacts.
Identical contacts in the current Identity folder and Shared Contacts count
as 2.

I should have said, "An Identical contact in the current Identity folder and
Shared Contacts counts as 2 contacts."
