Default How to restore folder lost during compacting

Hi,
I have Windows XP and OE6. Stupidly (in retrospect) I lost part of a
folder-content when I interrupted an automatic compacting process, by
switching off my PC.
Reading thru previous messages on this group I noted Bruce Hagen's comments
to look for .bak files in my Recycle-bin.
Indeed the folder.bak is there. Is there a way to restore this folder to the
original .dbx and return it to my OE6 ?
Thks for any advise.

1. For safety, do not work directly on FOLDER.BAK.
Copy this file to NEWFILE.NAM and work on the copy.
2. In your place, I would rename the copy TRIAL.DBX
and then see if I could use OE / File / Import to restore
its contents to an OE folder. If this does not work, get
one of the utilities to salvage damaged DBX files.

Default How to restore folder lost during compacting

The following copied from previous Bruce Hagen post....

To restore a bak folder to the message store folder, first find the location
of the Message Store.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of
your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder
location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the
location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write
the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.

In WinXP, the .dbx files are by default marked as hidden. To view these
files in Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start
| Control Panel | Folder Options | View.

Close OE and then in Windows Explorer, click on the dbx file for the
missing, or empty, folder and drag it to the Desktop. It can be deleted
later once you have successfully restored the bak file. Minimize the Message
Store.

Open OE and, if the folder is missing, create a folder with the *exact* same
name as the bak file you want to restore but without the .bak. Eg: If the
file is Saved.bak, the new folder should be named Saved. Open the new folder
and then close OE. If the folder is there, but just empty, continue on to
the next step.

First, check if there is a bak file already in the message store. If there
is, and you removed the dbx file, go ahead and rename it to dbx.

If it isn't already in the message store, open the Recycle bin and right
click on the bak file for the folder in question and click Restore. Open the
message store back up and change the file extension from .bak to .dbx. Close
the message store and open OE. The messages should now be back in the
folder.

If the messages are successfully restored, you can go ahead and delete the
old dbx file that you moved to the Desktop.

Default How to restore folder lost during compacting

All e-mail items may be missing when you start Outlook Express 6 Service
Pack 1:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918069

To restore a bak folder to the message store folder, first locate the
Message Store in Windows Explorer.

In OE: Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location
of your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in
Windows Explorer.

In WinXP, the dbx files are by default marked as hidden. To view these files
in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under
Start | Control Panel | Folder Options Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer |
Tools | Folder Options | View.

In Windows Explorer, click on the dbx file for the missing, or empty, folder
and drag it to the Desktop. It can be deleted later once you have
successfully restored the bak file. Minimize the Message Store.

Don, Ken and Bruce, many thks for your quick responses. Highly appreciated
you took the time and trouble..

I followed Bruce's instructions, and have now a restored .dbx folder (from
the .bak in the recycle bin) inside my message store folder.
but the contents do not yet show up in Outlook Express.
I did create an empty folder within OE with the same name, but it remains
empty.
How do I get the contents of the restored .dbx folder in my OE6.
Any ideas ?

Thks for any further advice.

Default How to restore folder lost during compacting

You did drag the original dbx file out of the message store first?

You then right clicked on the bak file in the Recycle Bin and chose Restore?

You created a folder in OE with the same name, (minus the dbx or bak
extension)?

Did you open the folder and then close OE?

You now renamed the file from bak to dbx?

You opened OE an the folder is empty?

What is the size of the file for the folder in the message store?

Default How to restore folder lost during compacting

Hi Bruce,
thks for sticking with me.
Yes I did the first 6 things you indicated, with one proviso, i.e.
before I got your instruction, I experimented and dragged the .bak folder
out of the recycle-bin to the desktop and re-nenamed it .dbx,
I could not do anything with it so I left it till I got your instruction.
I did then do the reverse, i.e. renamed it back to .bak and returned it to
the bin. Then I started your procedure.

The other funny thing is that the .dbx folder now in the message store has
(1) added to its' filename, so I also opened a similar empty folder with (1)
added in OE,
in the hope this would work. Unfortunately not.
The size of the folder in the message store is 181,771KB which tallies with
the original folder.

Did I do something wrong ? Is there still a solution ?
Thanks,
hmdotcom

Just for the sake of explanation, let's call the original folder Temp.

Where is Temp.bak now?

Is there a Temp.dbx and a Temp(1).dbx file in the message store?

Was OE closed whenever you were dragging folders around? I'm trying to
follow this but I'm getting confused.

The only Temp.bak folder was in the recycle-bin (there was no .bak in the
message store) and was restored to Temp.dbx, after which it came back into
the message store as Temp (1).dbx of 181,771KB
There is indeed still another Temp (1).dbx file in the message store, but
this looks empty with only 75 KB.
I deleted the Temp.dbx dragged to desktop.
