Default Font problems

Hi
A friend has the following problem - My Outlook Express no longer allows me
to change the font, the size of the font, or change the colour of the font. I
can highlight the text, click on Format, click on Font, select a new font,
new size or select a font colour - but nothing happens. Clicking on Font,
size and colour in the toolbar makes no difference either. I'm stuck in Times
New Roman, 12, and any colour you like providing it's black!! And I can't
select any symbols, such as the degree symbol, which makes typing
navigational problems for RVCP a bummer. Any suggestions?

This is in XP - OE 6

As the man says any suggestions

By the way how do I get to this group through the communities, I just happen
to be here as it is an option when posting a question. A url would be
appreciated

Regards Wombat

OLEXP: Cannot Change Text Format Using Outlook Express
(OE and IE ignore colors)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=178895
Also check Control Panel, Accessibility Options, Display and Uncheck Use
High Contrast

You can also get to the Outlook Express newsgroups via this web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities...s/default.mspx
There select Internet Explorer, then Outlook Express.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Here is the state of play at the moment

"My Outlook Express no longer allows me to change the font, the size of the

"Thanks for that website but it only covers WIN 98 - WIN 2000, and I have
WIN XP Home Edition. I have tried to fiddle around with Accessibility, but
all I achieved was to prevent the keyboard from typing in any words at all.
I could type but nothing appeared on the screen So I went back through
Accessibility and switched everything off, and now I can type again.

"No, I am not using Stationery, although right now I am fairly well
stationary, as far as resolving the problem! That will teach me to fiddle
about with the control panel!

"And NO, I still can't change the font, font size or font colour. Gremlins!
I'll keep on trying and will let you know if I have any success.

It seems the only way I can do degrees and other navigation symbols in an
email is to type it up in Word, then cut and paste into Outlook Express.
[He is writing information with degrees for navigation]

"However, when I cut and paste it into Outlook Express I lose the font and
the colours of the original! In the text below I had the questions in blue
and the answers in red, but when I do a 'select all', 'copy', and 'paste'
into the outgoing message in Outlook Express I lose the font I typed it in
(Verdana) and the colours ( blue, red and purple).

"However, when I highlight the text in the outgoing message, which is shown
in black and Times New Roman, select Copy, then return to Word and paste it,
the colours and font originally selected return.

"Maybe I have disabled "allow different fonts and colour in Outlook Express"
somewhere?"

[I have also cut and pasted into my OE and it is OK.
Sounds as if the program is not working correctly - how does he overwrite OE?]

Have you tried a new identity as was suggested?

You may have a damaged identity especially if it is the default Main
Identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it.
If all is well, you can import your messages and Address Book from the old
identity and delete it.
