I've tried multi different ways to get my old OE folders, messages and
Address Book to my new computer. I'm just about blind after reading ALL Microsoft site's data and other tech help sites and I’ve read the “One way to export address book entries is to export as a CSV file”, etc. - still nothing specifically applies here - maybe because I did not back up as per OEEXP's - (simple, complete, or partial)? I saved to CD-RW's all data and can't get the most recent Address Book, folders or messages. I found three ..wab address books, but they are old(2000) and some old .dbx files (also old) in a backup folder of OE. I might have goofed when I deleted the ~ file icons when they appeared on the old desktop (didn't know they were backups). Can't someone PLEASE help me? Thank you so much in advance!!! Thanks in advance -- Louise Thompson |

I've just found a backup CD-RW with a Registry Mechanic program. It has a
backup folder - 2.07MB, dated 30/12/05. Can I somehow work with the data here to get the recent Address Book, folders and messages I'm looking for exported/imported/c&p'd, or whatever to my new system? -- Louise Thompson "Louise Thompson" wrote: I've tried multi different ways to get my old OE folders, messages and Address Book to my new computer. Backing Up, Recovering and Restoring Outlook Express versions 5 & 6
Files and Settings http://www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx http://www.insideoe.com/backup/index.htm http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/how.htm#importOE5 For files that were copied to CD, after copying the file back to the hard disk, you must remove the Read-only attribute that all CD files automatically get before using the file in your application (this includes trying to import in Outlook Express). Right click the file in the Windows File Explorer, select Properties and the General tab and uncheck the Read-Only box. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Louise Thompson" (nospam) wrote in message news ![]() I've just found a backup CD-RW with a Registry Mechanic program. If you are trying to import the info from the CD, it will always fail since
a Read-Only attribute is set when anything is copied to a CD. You need to copy the appropriate files (all DBX and WAB files to a separate folder on your hard drive) then select all the files and clear the Read only attribute. Then open Outlook Express and use its menu, File/Import/Messages and File/Import/Address Book. I am in the same bind, I formatted a larger drive, installed XP and had
copied the Identities folder, the dbx messages, to a CD to be 'imported' into the new OE. But everytime I tried to import them (after unchecking the read only on all dbx files), OE import wizard ALWAYS said the folder was in use and I could not import. I can't DO the import without OE open, there is no Mail icon in my Control Panel. I made 'absolutely sure' I was importing from the folder, the Outlook Express folder, I created on the C: drive where I copied the folder from the backup CD. After that import 'feature' never worked, I opened 2 Explore windows and copied the individual dbx files from the folder to the OE folder, all the dbx files including the folder.dbx. Most of these worked fine (I chose to overwrite the existing) in the copy over process. The only one that didn't was the Inbox, along with it's subfolders which were my most Important. Could any of this problem have to do with the fact that the Identities are different numbers? ..... the long 20 digit number that OE gives to the identity? I did copy the individual dbx files btw, not the identity number. Would you or anyone know of a way I can get my 'old Inbox' into OE or better yet, merge the two? The current Inbox has 4 messages that were delivered since I've been on this new setup, the old Inbox has a size of 444,738kb. TIA katy "Jim Pickering" wrote in message ... An older Inbox of that size is most likely corrupted and thus will not
import. You can buy a $5 program called DBXtract that will attempt to recover messages from that old Inbox to a folder as EML files and then you can drag/drop those EML files into a folder you create in Outlook Express for archival purposes. But please do not copy them to the Inbox as you only invite corruption again in your new, empty Inbox. Katy, Jim, Mike,
When I did a .wab, .dbx search on the CDs it also searched the new C drive and I was shocked to see more than a page of folders and files - 27!!! No wonder I kept getting the message that the folder or files were "locked in another application"! I deleted all from the C drive and emptied the recycle bin, so now I am back to square one. On 1 CD I have 28 .dbx files and 1 .wab address in a backup folder(10/2000), but when I search the E (after deleting them from the C drive) the search results read C drive - how come?. On 2nd CD I have Outlook Express(including a ~ file which I thought was a backup when a new contact was added to the Address Book, but no .wab or .dbx show on the search. On a 3rd and 4th CD I have winbackup2pro and Registry Mechanic- recent(last month) , but neither shows .dbx or .wab (Sure don't know why I paid for these useless programs!!!) So is there any hope that I can restore any of my folders or messages? I feel like I'm doing a lot of searching for nothing. Ditto on the TIA -- Louise Thompson "Jim Pickering" wrote: An older Inbox of that size is most likely corrupted and thus will not import. I'll give this DBXtract a try. Even though I still have the original drive
with the original emails, it almost sounds easier with the $5 program. If that doesn't work I can hook up the old drive again, delete half the junk in that Inbox and try different things. Post back if you continue to have problems after running DBXtract. Remember
to copy the DBX file to a folder on your hard drive and then run DBXtract, which is slow while working but should do the job. I've just ordered DBXtract also, but I have two questions:
Is there another downloadable program that will find my address book as well? I have a ~file in my current (XP) OE, but I don't know what program to choose to open it to see what's in the file. Adobe is highlighted, but it won't work with this file. Thanks! -- Louise Thompson "katy" wrote: I'll give this DBXtract a try.
