From an old post concerning OE freezes.
I now have the same problem on another computer, except that OE continues to remained frozen on subsequent re-boots. I took OE offline and compressed all the folders and re-booted, but still get the same problem. ======(old post Oct 21, 2007)======= ID = OE freezes following the morning's boot "if" I click on "Send/Recv". Other functions "Newsgroups", folder and message views function normally, but as soon as I click on "Send/Recv" OE "hour-glasses" and I have to cancel with the Task Manager. There are no error messages nor do I get the opportunity to log the condition with MS. The problem clears up if I re-boot the machine. I've been using OE for at least 10 years or more without any difficulties. I don't see anything in recent MS updates pertaining to OE, so I can't tell if any recent MS updates are to blame or not. Any suggestions? Thanks, Bill |

You may have a damaged identity especially if it is the default Main
Identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it. If all is well, you can import your messages and Address Book from the old identity and delete it. How to Create and Use Identities in Outlook Express http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=209169 General precautions for Outlook Express: Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. Okay, I created a new identity and imported both the message
store and WAB. I found where the new store was created, but in looking in HKEY_CURRENT_USER, it appears that the WAB file applies to both identities. Do WAB files support multiple identities within a single file? We'll have to wait for a day or so to see if OE executes properly. I'll keep this thread tagged so I'll remember to post back one way or another. Bill "Bruce Hagen" wrote in message ... You may have a damaged identity especially if it is the default Main Identity. One WAB can do more than one identity. This is how I bring it to a new ID,
but what you did is probably fine. Open the Address Book in the old identity and File | Export | Address Book (wab) to any place on your HDD that is easy for you. My Documents is fine. Then, open the Address Book in the new identity and File | Import | Address Book (wab) and point to where you saved it. Note that just like your messages, it is a good idea to back up your address book. Exporting & importing that way just left a copy in My Documents. Hope the big problem is solved. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA "Bill" wrote in message ... Okay, I created a new identity and imported both the message store and WAB. Thanks Bruce, to know that there are multiple identities within a single
WAB is useful knowledge in these instances. However, it brings up the question of how to delete all parts of the old ''Main Identity'' without damaging the WAB? Does OE purge the appropriate portions of the WAB when the message store and contacts are to be deleted? Intuitively, I would say yes, in that OE was capable of creating the separate contacts when I imported the address book to begin with. However, I'd rather ask for confirmation on that point before "I shoot a hole in my foot". Bill "Bruce Hagen" wrote in message ... One WAB can do more than one identity. There aren't multiple identities within a single WAB, they are using the
same WAB. The only thing you have to worry about is removing the identity in Manage Identities. If you want to get exotic, do an Advanced search and include Hidden Files and Folders and search for: *.wab You can delete all except the one you are currently using, but none of the WABs are going to carry any corruption from your old identity. The corruption, if that is what it has turned out to be is in one or more dbx files in the IDs message store. Creating a new ID created new dbx files and that is really all that needs to be done. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA "Bill" wrote in message ...
