Default Allowing pictures in emails

I have been having quite a few emails come in from friends, where in place
of the picture, there is a little red "x". Is there a method of receiving
these when you open them?

There are a few possibilities. Some are on the sender's end, and some may be
on your end.

The red X's also appear if the sender has the wrong settings.
Tell him/her to try this:

Open Outlook Express.
In the Tools menu, select Options, and then click on the Send tab.
Where you see "Mail Sending Format", make sure that HTML is selected.
Then click on HTML Settings and check "Send pictures with messages."
