My OE receives the same emails, appx 100, everytime, already previously
received and then displays an error message 'Server terminated
connection........'.
As a result, no new emails are received!
My OS is XP.
Thank you

Is this a POP3 account?

Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced. Uncheck: Leave a copy of
messages on the server. Then delete the Pop3uidl.dbx file. You will get the
messages one more time, but that should be it.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of
your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in
Windows Explorer.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options
Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.

With OE closed, find the DBX file for the folder in question {Pop3uidl.dbx}
and delete it. A new one will be created automatically when you open OE.

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

Thank you for your prompt advice.
Yes, it is POP3.
I have deleted the file mentioned.
However, I am still receiving the same emails but only 26 now and then
nothing happens to the program.

It would appear that the download never completes, otherwise, there would be
nothing left on the server to download again. That is provided you have
Leave A Copy......... unchecked.

Does it stop on a specific message? In the Status Bar, does it say
Downloading X of XX messages? If it stops on 26, and there are more, then #
27 is a corrupt message.

Logon to your ISPs Webmail site and see what you can read and delete there.
If you get rid of the problem message, or all of them, that should fix you
up.

POP3 mail: http://www.insideoe.com/problems/bugs.htm#pop3uidl

HTTP (Hotmail) and IMAP: http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/why.htm#dupes

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and do not attempt to
close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting
is taking place.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

There is an email on the server that OE can't handle for some reason, so it
never finishes the download and clears things.

The easiest way to handle this is to go to your email provider's web page
for email and remove the offending message there.
